This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Fanboy behaviour?

What do you have to do to be considered a fanboy?
I've heard the term bandied about a bit on the net and would like to hear your interpretations of what one is.

So atheists have been abused, treated badly by clergy or they\'re stupid.They\'re just being trendy because they can\'t understand The God Delusion because they don\'t have the education, plus they\'re just pretending to be atheists anyway. Pundit you\'re the one with a problem, terminal stupidity.

Not exactly. It might be a really good product. But fannish enthusiasm is so tiring and boring, whether it be about games, music or anything else. Even when it's something I like myself.

So you're objecting to enthusiasm.
Why does it seem tiring or boring to you?
I'd have thought that enthusiasm would stimulate just the opposite emotions.
I've read some dislike  against "Fanboys" by RPG makers. I'd have thought that such people would be pleased to have someone enthusiastic about their products. Or does the Fanboyish behaviour have a negative effect on selling the product? Putting the non Fanboys off?

It just does. Maybe I'm jaded and detached.

It appears that a few game designers are too.
If enthusiasm of the endless type is how a Fanboy is recognised then there are more than a few on this site. So why are they mentioned with dislike, often by people who would qualify as Fanboys themselves?

Hypocrisy.

"Fanboy Enthusiasm" is people deciding to argue about whether or not Han Solo shot first.

Its also silly arguments about whether Babylon 5 is better than Deep Space Nine.

Its silly when its in a mall at a game store - but there it comes with the job.

But when these guys travel hundreds of miles to an out of state convention and have thse arguments - thats kind of sad.

When I hear those arguments at a convention...I DO NOT  get involved, IF I reluctantly talk to these guys at all its usually to ask : "Is this is the hallway leading to the dance ?"

Best parts of most cons are the room parties and the dances.

You have to say something someone else doesn't like about a game you like or they dislike. Who is a fanboy and who is not is pretty much in the eye of the other guy you're arguing with.

a fanboy at heart cannot see any wrong in a game or designer even when presented with overwhelming evidence. They also tend to push their games on others lik Jahova's (SP?) witnesses.:D

Koltar, these kind of arguments are the bread and butter of websites like these. I can't see much difference in a lot of what is posted here(or many other sites) and the "Han Solo shooting first" brigade! Likewise Bab5 and DS9.
Roleplaying games are inherently silly. Lets face it, we all sit around a table pretending to be knights or wizards. How sillier can you get. We're all Fanboys ( even the female roleplayers).
You going to a convention strikes me as particularly Fanboyish, since I've never been to one. Though I think that the room parties and dances sounds like HUGE fun. See I'm a Fanboy too!;)
