Title: Dungeon Meshi
Post by: nielspeterdejong on February 26, 2024, 05:29:38 AM
What do you guys think of Dungeon Meshi? I honestly quite like the designs for the gnomes, as well as how well thought out the author made her world. It's rather refreshing.

It has a very D&D feel to it despite not being based on D&D.

The dungeons being a source of mana and having to effectively learn how to grow and cultivate them like a plant is interesting. It is an outgrowth of the "Living Dungeon" concept that dies the rounds in some lite novels.

The Anime leaves alot out though from the Manga. I followed the manga up till about the big dragon battle and then lost interest when the plot took a severe swerve.

I've finished the manga as I was following it for years.

IMO its one of the best fantasy manga out there that isn't another isekai tropefest. It has good humor but also does not shy away from tackling more serious stuff. And it still keeps a lighthearted tone even when stakes are raised so you don't feel like it completely switched to something else. The smaller worldbuilding we get from early chapters do a wonderful job to prepare you for some of the later explanations. On a reread, I was very happy to see some of the details that I missed or dismissed as funny banter.

I'm not so sure about not being based on D&D. Author Ryoko Kui is an RPG fan, as she has made fanarts of game characters and even listed some of her favourite games in a recent interview. It may be based on Sword World which was based on early D&D.

One of my favorites. I was hoping the anime would come out so people could start talking about the manga.

Its not too bad. Its a little more humorous than your typical fantasy setting, sort of in the vein of many comedy isekai (really kicking off with Konosuba). I personally prefer Record of Lodoss War, but its not bad. Its basically following a theme of Fantasy Food series like Restaurant to Another World (which is reverse isekai) and Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (which is isekai).

Dungeon Meshi came out before both of those books, so it's not really following.

I just started watching the show recently. I forgot about the treasure bugs, like the gold bugs in Fiend Folio but with extra variants like a necklace centipede. Cool stuff.

LOL!

Figured some people might get a snicker from this fan art. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has been fantastic (and the fan art coming from it is superb).

Its like Sword Art and Hack Sign. Few are aware that those were both written for the same contest if I recall correctly, or at least written around the same time.

Then again I saw someone badmouthing the original Buck Rogers serial for ripping off Star Wars opening recap crawl. You know, the series that came out in 1939.
