Is she an 80s chick or what? I mean I am getting such an 80s vibe off her music...

That is all.

A friend of mine picked this up and I listened to it.  The two singles off it ("You're So Gay" and "I Kissed A Girl") are the highlights.  Which is a sad, sad statement.  Because those songs are, at best, half-witty.  Not witty, half-witty.  But she does have an interesting sensibility to her.

I get sort of a rockabilly vibe off her, from the way she dresses and the look of her album, but the music itself is strictly the blandest sort of bland pop music.  It seriously makes me want to listen to old Madonna albums, and yeah, it does have a very 80's sound to it.

I think it's the producer's fault.  The album had all the classic marks of too many fucking A&R idiots giving notes and making decisions.  She could also use a song-writing coach, because some of her songs are almost there lyrically.  the thing smells like it was produced by Randy Jackson (of American Idol) or quite possibly someone so lame that they actually wish they had Randy Jackson's (ever so meager) talent.  Basically it sounds like it was produced by someone who hasn't learned a new trick in twenty years.

She might be able to put out a decent album if she worked with a smart producer who understands rockabilly and could give her a good dirty sound.  She does have a decent voice and knows how to put the right inflection on a lyric to make it saucy, but either she got fucked by a label and stuck with the producer who have no clue what they are doing.  Like if she hooked up with the Reverend Horton Heat,  Gibby Haynes (of Butthole Surfers) or Dave Hartman (Southern Culture on the Skids) she could put out a decent album and have a real career.

Or she can keep listening to her current managers and agents and be a two-hit wonder.

She is the one who sang this past year's version of "I kissed a Girl" .

Meanwhile, everyone seems to have forgotten about Jill Sobule.

Seems pretty reminiscent of the 80s. Love the midi, synth and I swear, I wrote that bass line in my old band...

Oh, and "I kissed a Girl"

Not to be confused with
"I kissed a Girl"

Oh, and to be clear Good Doctor, I was looking for a consul80tion on how 80s this woman is. I have not decided myself.

It's not a "version."  It's an entirely different song that happens to have the same title.  The way you said it makes it sound like it's a cover of the Jill Sobule song.  It's not, and thematically the songs are completely different.

In their defense, Jill Sobule was pretty forgettable.  Can you name her second single without looking it up?  I couldn't.

And by this time next year we'll be saying, "Katy Perry, who?"

Okay, first of all--HOLY SHIT SHE'S IN MY CYBERPUNK SETTING.

I'm looking at this "Hot N Cold" video and the sequence in the nightclub is, like, 89% accurate to my idea of what a dance club might look like in a cyberpunk world per me.  There's a distinct lack of cybernetics and holograms, but that's minor.  So that's good.  Oh, and that gang of chicks with bats and ton-up wedding dresses?  Very The Warriors, which is another key ingredient.  Breakdancing?  Plus plus plus.  Muchos puntos.

I gotta say, though -- either she's really, really hard to deal with...or that dude is a fucking idiot, running away from her.  Can't her see her legs?!  Dipstick.  That girl is packin' some hotness.  Too bad for her, I'm married.

As for the song, I am totally down with the synthpoptasticity.  Approved. The other about kissin' girls's OK, too.

So...is pop music starting to sound, you know...not stupid, again?  Do the kids have this back?  In other words, is civilization redeemable, maybe?

I concur good Doctor. I would like to think there is hope. Linda mentioned hopefully that the 80s might be making a comeback. I warned her of radicals like Mr. Mike Crow, notorious 80's Hater.

And I must back you up, she would need to be serious psycho level and even then...

Yessir.  I'm happily married but I am not dead, and although I'm not exactly out shopping, I sure can make recommendations.

My wife, it turns out, likes this Katy Perry's music and is likely gonna buy the CD.  She claims not to have gleaned The Vibe from it, which means that maybe my wife is the dead one, or maybe just a commie.  No, no...likely, just filtering differently.  I have grape Kool-Aid, by the way, and it is awesome.

Maybe your wife has been replaced by a replicant or cyborg or something.  Does she hang out by the wall outlets and look guilty when you catch her?
