Title: Anyone Here An NFL Fan?
Post by: Zachary The First on September 02, 2007, 02:13:52 AM
That's right.  National Football League (http://www.nfl.com/).

For my part, I have been an Indianapolis Colts fan since our city lured them away from the lousy, national STD hub of Baltimore in 1984.  And man, did we suck ass for a good, long time.  Then we got one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game (who will likely be Top 5 of all time by the time he's done, perhaps #1 with some luck), Jughead himself, Peyton Manning, and then we only sucked ass against the hated New England Patriots and their metrosexual manwhore QB, Tom Brady, and their whino, asshole coach Bill Belichick.  And then just this year, Bob Sanders killed like 4 guys on the field in cold blood and we pulled off this crazy comeback and beat the Pats and won the Super Bowl against the Bears.  And now we'll probably start getting our faces punched in by the Pats again, but boy was it totally worth it.

That's right.  Our mascot is a horsie.  Wheee!

OK, so any other NFL fans here?  Who's your team?  Who's your least favorite team?  And yeah, I'm sure the majority of folks don't give a crap, but it is that time of year (Thursday:  New Orleans vs. Indy!!!!).

For me, I dislike the Jaguars and Cowboys, and hate the Patriots with an all-consuming passion, like freakin' Sith Lord Lightning Bolt-causing levels.

College Football:  My alma mater of Maryland (Go Terps!), and Purdue (Go Boilers!).  I used to like Notre Dame, until Charlie Weiss ate it.  Any team coached by Steve Spurrier, I pretty much dislike by way of him.  Boise State's a fun one to root for, too.

Yeah!  You guys should have a really good team this year!  Congrats on the preseason win! :p (Hey, no injuries for either side, that's what preseason should be about)!

Hey man - we had YEARS of losing teams. At least the past 3 or 4 seasons Marvin Lewis has gotten us either in the playoffs or damn close to it.

There a townhouse complex near the mall that I work at - the Bengalsd organization tends to put up rookies there the first year they play. As a result I've gotten the chance to bump into a few of the players as they shop at the mall sometimes. Lewis at least gave the veterans pride and a new spirit.

The only reason why the Colts are superior now is due to Peyton Manning. The state of Tennessee and the city of Knoxville and the UT Volunteers accepts your thanks for our gift of Peyton Manning to the Indianapolis Colts, thus changing the team from one of sucktitude to one of awesomeness. We're alwasy glad to help underpriveleged NFL teams...  :D

You are correct (though there are perhaps 4 other HoFers on the roster as well) Seriously, the Sovereign Corn Barony of Indiana blesses you for your gift. Thank you very much! May all your sons have fine, strapping mullets!!!

:p

Hey, I should add UT to my college teams.  Bad day against Cal, but they'll rebound.

@ Koltar:  Man, you guys did a have tough run.  Glad to see you guys are looking good these days!

There is only one NFL team - all the rest are wannabes:

Dallas Cowboys.

Yeah, I said it.

As for my second-favorite team: Anyone playing the Eagles.

God, I hate the Eagles. Really. REALLY. I'd play Poison'd if my victim could be the Philadelphia Eagles.

Well, maybe not, but still....

So, who's setting up our Fantasy Football League? Better hurry - games start THURSDAY BAYBEEE!

Another household of Cowboy fans, although my son likes the Colts almost as much.  Initially when he was much younger because their mascot was a horse...now, because he's always liked them and because of Peyton Manning.

Hey - at least Michael Vick wasn't our quarterback.

I kind of miss quarterback Jon Kitna, he was a nice contrast to many NFL players that make the news. He also mentored and trained Carson Palmer.  Seemed to be a very decent guy.

Who do I root for BESIDES the Bengals??

The Chicago Bears - my family has a lot of ties to that part of the country, also the Colts. I 'm going on the silly theory that any time a Mid-west based team wins its a good thing. So, my favorite situation for the playoffs would be if the Chicago Bears, The Indianapolis Colts, ANd the Cincinati Bengals all make it into the playoss ....and at least one of these three gets into the Superbowl.  Then in the Superbowl they beat the snot out of either a west coast or east coast team.

I'm a huge Dolphins fan, although it's been very rough since Marino left.

No idea why they got rid of Gus Frerotte. He was the only quarterback they have had since Marino who wasn't incompetent. Not a great quarterback by any stretch of the imagination, but good enough to win if the rest of the team played well.

Trent Green will probably play halfway decent until he gets injured again. I think Beck will be a bust and Quinn will quickly develop into a solid starter in Cleveland, once again proving the guys in the war room are clueless come draft day.

The personnel moves have been baffling and all the high priced coaches since Shula have been disappointing. Don't even get me started on Nick Saban.

Still, I have to hope that this year is our year.

Other teams I watch on occasion are the Steelers and Bears. Oh, and anyone who is beating the Bills.

College, well, I think that one is pretty obvious, given my username. When I was a student they were top 10 material. I don't know what has been going through the heads of the coaches lately, they just seem out of touch with the game.

It's hard to say.  Farve still has a few years in him, but Ted Thompson(the gm) really wants to make a whole new team, and isn't looking to put instant talent around Farve.  I still think he will play next year though, but that could just be my wishful thinking.

He should play pretty good this year, but its rookie's all around him, so there will be mistakes.  However the defense is looking pretty damn good, so if that pressure is off him it could make things a lot easier.  It's kinda weird to be rooting for the defense though.

Wow..does that explain a lot about chuckles :p

Bears - the only team that matters, really.  I mean the Colts are great and all - I like them, in fact.  Nothing would make me happier than to see the Bears beat the Colts in the Next Superbowl.

It will be an interesting year.  I think the Bears are in for a let down early.  I'll look at the schedule and see, but the way they are talking...I don't know...they seem a little too confident.  I mean, not every team is from Green Bay...

God I love the rivalries in sports...

Seems like we might be genetically predisposed to dislike one another ;)

But really, what team does well the year after losing the superbowl?  Unless the bears become the new Bills, that would be awesome.

Bring it, cheese boy...and see what a world of pain feels like ;)

No, if you read my post, I said beat the Colts next year.

I've said to my Colts-fan brother-in-law that I think it would be great to have the Bears and Colts in the next few Superbowls going back and forth.  It could build a rivalry, but not the kind we have with Green Bay where the hatred is almost palpable at times (or go to a Cubs/Sox game and watch the fights!). But an old school wow these teams really compete at a different level because of the return to the biggest game kind of rivalry. Almost like New England and Indy - except it's at the right level and, well, who cares about New England?

The cities are close, so the fans will travel.  Chicago is a major media market and Indy gets the spotlight nationwide mostly a result of having the best QB in football - so the sponsors will all get their money's worth.  It's a win/win for everyone except those bastards in Green Bay and New England, and who gives a flying fuck about them?

My brother in law (the Colts fan) is also an Notre Dame alum.  I was at teh game on Saturday out of a sense of family obligation (to keep peace) even though I grew up hating ND.

Saturday was one of those days when the planets align.  Notre Dame loses (and I get to watch it), Michigan loses to App State (are you fucking kidding me?), and the Cubs win.  All was right with the world....wait, what did the White Sox do?

I do like the Bears, and root for them when they aren't playing the Colts.  I wouldn't mind seeing a few more Bears-Colts Superbowls.

And a bit off topic, but geez!  What happened to Michigan?  Could we see the shittiest ND/Michigan game of all time this year?  "The Battle for Fruit of the Loom Castrol Oxy Clean Bowl....eligibility".

No...trust me.  Michigan will kill Notre Dame unless they somehow get that offensive line to work miracles in the interim.

And it couldn't make me happier - Michigan out of contention after one game and Notre Dame with a suck-ass team.

Bears/Colts Superbowl..I wonder what the line is on that...

Sometimes you just gotta laugh to keep yourself from crying...

How are the Packers this year?  I haven't been watching preseason much (like's been to crazy), but it looked like early in training camp the sports media was talkinag about how they had better receivers this year which would help them immensely.

I'm gonna burn down your vacation house, flatlander.  The WR are talented, but they have zero experience.  Farve's bitched about it, but it might turn out ok.  On the local news here we keep getting stories about how Farve has no friends on the team, cause the average age is like 23.

We have like 3 injured RB's, a couple on IR and none of them can really be starters.  It's kind of bizzaro world, because the defense holds more promise, and has more depth then the offense.  Bears v. Packers could look like the battle of the akkido masters.

Teams I hate: fucking Packers, cheesehead bastard inbreeds.

Been a Vikings fan ever since I can remember. I once I caught the girl I was dating at the time with a Packers shirt. I took it from her and bought her a real jersey (a Vikings jersey) and burned the Packers shirt on the grill.

Looking forward to this season because we have a bunch of good young talent on the team and will be better than most people expect.

my point about Jackson is that he cannot possibley be any worse than Brad Johnson was last year. In all fairness Adrian Peterson is a much better prospect than Cadiallac was. AP is the greatest Football player to come out of the biggest football state in the country. Plus, we have McCaulley(Rookie CB) who looks like he should have been  a middle first rounder, Robison(Rookie DE) who has been dominating all preseason, Greenway is back and looking really good, and Sidney Rice is likely to be a starter by the end of the season.

Actually, I'm safe with that bet because it's a never-ending bet.  He can never prove, until Grossman dies, that the Bears have not won the Superbowl with Rex as QB.

Manning's a hack - he'll be out of the league doing ESPN2 commentary on Division II college games in two years...

Yeah, that's why it's a good bet. I doubt any team from the NFC will beat SD,IND or NE  much less a team with Grossman for QB.

Wow.  The Saints came out flat tonight.  After the first half, they looked awful.  I hope they pick it up.  I like Drew Brees too much for this to be a harbinger of the rest of his season.  Hopefully, that was just 1st-game boo-boos.

But, man, is it good to have the NFL back!

Oh, here's my picks for everything:

Top Seed, AFC:  Chargers
AFC Champ:  Colts...for now...but that's just because they haven't lost it yet.
Flop of the Year, AFC:  Randy Moss
Guy Who Will Be In Trouble By End of the Year, NFC:  Randy Moss
Better Than You Think:  Pitt Steelers
Worse:  Baltimore Ravens (slightly, but still with a great D.  Won't finish well).
Just As Bad As You Think:  K.C. Chiefs

Top Seed, NFC:  Chi-Town Bears.
NFC Champ:  Eagles.  That, or they lose 8 games.
Flop of the Year:  T.O., I hope.  How many drops can he have?  How long before he tears into a teammate or his new coach?
Guy Who Will Be In Trouble By End of the Year, NFC: Jon Gruden
Better Than You Think:  Detroit Lions(yeah, I can't believe I typed that, either)
Worse:  Minnesota Vikings
Just As Bad As You Think: Atlanta Falcons

It'll be fun to see if I got about 85% of this wrong, like last year.

from what I was seeing David was watching the QB too much. As soon as he'd turn his head to look into the backfield the WR would cut and manning would throw the ball. I think it was more about him not watch WR more than no saftey help.

He's converting from a cover two corner where there job is to cover the flats and short zone and watch the quarterback while the free and strong safety cover the deep zones (Bears run the same D).  It'll take some time to get used to more man to man coverage.

To be fair, I think he would have gotten away with it if Payton Manning wasn't the opposing QB. Manning was laying those passes on the money with perfect timing. A lesser QB might not have made those throws. But yeah, he needs to get used to the new system.

Something else to consider - coming from the Colts, they knew his tendencies and could exploit them, and by god if ANYONE is going to exploit a weakness, it'll be Manning and his receivers. I know it was Reggie Wayne's night, but I'd still take Harrison over anyone in the league.

Bears offense looked terrible. Sure the chargers have a good defense but christ the Bears sucked.

Vikes look good. The Defense had 6 sacks including two from our rookie Robison who is going to be an absolute beast. EJ Henderson had 2 sacks as well. Greenway had 10 Tackles after blowing his knee out on the first play of his rookie season last year. We had two INTs returned for TDs. If this was a fight someone (our D VS their O) someone should have thrown the towl in for Atlanta.

On offense we weren't all that great but Jackson got the job done throwing one TD and managing the game well. In the second half the Vikes opened up the offense a little and showed that Jackson can thow the ball. Adrian Peterson tore it up. 165 total yards and one TD. This kid is lighting in a bottle. So fast, once he gets in the open it looks like everyone else is standing still. Plus he's 6'2 220, so he's powerfull as well. I was at the game and I can tell you that this is the loudest I've heard the dome in a long time. We cause Harrington to call 3 TO because the crowd was so loud he couldn't call audibles. O-line was jumping because they counldn't tell if the QB called for the snap or not.

The game was an absolute blast, most fun I've had in a long time. :D

Giants - Dallas: Wow that was a lot of scoring. It will be interesting to see if the Giants can bounce back, but this loss seemed kind of demoralizing and I don't expect much from these guys this season.

If the Bears could hold onto a ball, they could have won that game - idiots.

The defense looked really good - I mean, they held LT to 25 yards going into the 4th quarter or something.  Any of you fnatasy league guys know the final tally for him?

And who would have thought - in the NFC North the Bears are the only team without a victory?

Bears Good: Rex looked good (until I turned it off in disugust with 6 minutes or so left in the game and the Bears down 14-3; anything happen after that?). The line gave up too many sacks early, but then seemed to settle down nicely. Running game looked OK. Defense looked great with only a few breakdowns in the secondary. The run defense looked awesome.

Bears Bad: Hold on to the fucking ball you imbeciles.

Thanks Mcrow - I meant how many yards.  Turns out it was 25 yards on 17 carries - for the game! I don't know much about fantasy league stuff (I'm not into that) but man, if he still has a good week with 25 yards they must weight TD's a lot.

After looking at some more stuff, the most worrysome part of the entire day was possibly losing Brown.  I hadn't even thought about it as they had him listed as a knee sprain.  But now there's talk of losing him for the season.  At least the speculation is he's really got a torn ACL - all rumor.  But if true, devastating to lose him again - that guy rocks.

Man is it Monday morning or what...

Just out of curiousity - how big, in terms of fantasy leagues, is his TD pass*? Is it the same, essentially, as any other TD (I would assume as otherwise a QB who runs a lot of them in versus one who throws would be different)?

*Did you know he's now one behind the greatest running back ever in terms of touchdown passes?

Talk about a ticky-tack call on Todd Heap pushing off.  By no means do I think that penalties can win or lose football games, just give additional chances to win or lose, but that is about the loosest definition of offensive pass interference I've witnessed.  The Ravens had the opportunity to take the game back and failed so congrats to the Bengals.

Jury is still out. I think last year was sort of throw away year because he has never been a headcoach and he was still stuck with all of Tice's personel. This year the team looks improved, defense is better (maybe top 3 in the NFL), Offense is improved (more athletic recievers, Adrian Peterson). I think Jackson is an improvement over Brad Johnson and he'll only get better over the course of the year. Our recievers are athletic but young, so like Jackson they should get better.

Childress had enough sense to turn-over the play calling to the offensive coordinater this year and now the play calling is better. Our two drafts since Childress has been here have been very good: We got starting LB,WR,QB,RB,2DE,and one offensive linemen. That's right 7 starters drafted in two years, plus about 8 other players who have contributed a lot to the team as backups or special teams standouts.

I think my opinion of Childress largely depends on how he developes Jackson since he took sucha a huge risk starting him.

I think the worst part of the Pats situation is that now it casts doubt on everything they've accomplished. ANYONE who lost to them can now say "Well, they cheated!" which may or may not be true. They've done a huge amount of harm to their reputation.

Their only recourse now is to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl. They don't need a first-round pick, but a 2nd and 3rd would hurt more I think.

Total bullshit.  Belichick should have been suspended a game. Guess Bob Kraft is in that tight with the league office.

Yeah, lose a first-rounder.  When you already have two first-rounders next year.  If you make the playoffs.  Incredibly, harsh that.

The only comfort is the tarnish that will follow BB from now on.  No matter what, just like Bonds, there'll always be that vocal contigent who will color everything he has done or will do.  He's a grumpy asshole anyhow, but I do feel bad for some of the Pats players that will have some of their accomplishments thrown into doubt, however unfair.

For me it puts a big asterisk next to their names on the list of superbowl winners. All the comments coming out now by guys on the other team who were amazed at how many screen passes the Pats would call whenver the defense was going to blitz and things like that.

I don't know how much of an impact it really made, but the Pats cheated, a therefore didn't really win those superbowls in my book. Same thing as Barry Bonds. Hank Aaron's record still stands in my personal record book.

Okay, I have to ask.

Videotaping signals during the game your playing helps you in THAT game how, exactly? It might help you prepare for the next game, sure, but I don't know that it would have a bearing on the current contest.

If they had someone watching the opposing coaches intently, noting their signals on a notepad and charting the plays they were calling - that would be different how?

I've heard hundreds of accusations over the years of "stealing signals" - but if you're standing out in the open and waving your arms like a chicken, or tugging your nose, or whatever - the other team is just supposed to ignore it?

Not defending them necessarily, just asking. After all, every team uses videotape and still frame cameras DURING THE GAME to study the opposing teams formations and how they respond to various plays, offensively and defensively.

And the excuse making coming out of teams and players now who lost - are we really supposed to believe the entirety of New England's success was solely because of this? I don't think so. McNabb, give it up - you lost because you're overrated. Did New England beat you EVERY year you made it to the NFC Championship and tanked? Don't think so.

I think it's more important when they play again - which will happen as the Jets and Pats are in division and will, therefore, play later in the year.

And who is to say that it's not being relayed at half time?  I mean, hell, they have all of those picture that show what the defensive set was just before the snap moments after the offense comes off the field.  There's nothing that would stop them from looking at the video at halftime and telling the QB (Brady in this case), "Look, when you see the defensive caller make this signal, it's an all out blitz.  They'll break out of cover two and go man - you'll have the wide receiver on the weak side isolated."  In the hands of a competant QB, that's a huge advantage.  For Brady/Manning/Etc. - it's death for the defense.

And that's just a tiny fraction of what they could learn.  "If he makes this signal, we'll tell you in the headset - audible to Waffle-69-Red-324.  Don't ask, just do it - the hole will be big enough to drive a truck through."

I didn't see the game - was there a lot of scoring in the second half?

From what I've heard, the crew and camera were escorted off the field in the first quarter, so no information they obtained would have been used - and they still romped over the Jets.

Here's the box score:

Patriots (1-0-0)   7   7   14  10
Jets (0-1-0)        0   7   7    0

I've been thinking about that as well werekoala and I firmly believe it could help.  Being able to communicate knowledge to your quarterback regarding coverages and blitzes being signaled by the defense would give you an upper hand to get your offensive personnel in position to make a play or assist the quarterback in reading the coverage quicker.  Instead of guessing what they are going to do, you can call a play according to your strengths.  It wouldn't help all of the time because of execution but it could give you the best possible chance you have vs. an opponent.

I don't doubt it could help, what I'm wondering is could it help in THAT game, or just in preparation for the NEXT game? An article I read on ESPN.com made some points along the lines of "If it really helped, it would be in the second half after half-time adjustments.", which I can understand. They went on to say that if that were the case, you'd expect the Pats to get BETTER in the second half, but that many times they struggled, especially in the Super Bowls. For the record, I don't think there's a chance in HELL they could cheat AT the Super Bowl, so all the haters (and I'm not a Pats fan, but I DESPISE the Eagles) need to just admit they got their ass beat and get over it (lookin' at YOU McNabb).

It could help in that game if they were able to discern something specific before the second half but I'd think it would be a small percentage.  Filming signs would allow you to devise a cataloging of signs used by teams or at least by the defensive coordinators.  So during the 2nd half of the game it may only affect a handful of plays.  Once they're cataloged and deciphered it could be as many as 2 or three handfuls of plays.  Not a lot but enough to be significant.

Well, if you're able to successfully read 2-3 plays a game, that could be a huge difference. I think they could build up a bigger database for the teams they play twice a year - not sure it would help against their other opponents much except maybe in the second half.

Anyway, I'm pretty ambivalent about the whole thing, and I think people are blowing it out of proportion a bit. If it had been the Browns, there'd be a huge "meh" around the league. But its the Pats, so...

Yeah, I think only hard-core Jets fans think it actually would have changed that game.  But cheating is cheating, and in the bigger picture, it does throw some tarnish on Belichick's career.

Damn Brown. Damn Zebras.

Did the defense for either team even show up for this game ?

Talking the Bengals vs. Browns of course....

That's not growing pains, he was a complete idiot. All 3 of the 4 INTs didn't have a Viking within 10 yards of the ball. Seriously, I expect some INTs from a guy is basically a rookie QB but fucking A!

Now, I'm not ready to give up on him but he hasn't shown anything yet this year (In game) that would lead you to believe he should be a NFL QB.

Jackson didn't impress much as a Razorback. He had a serious gun of an arm, but was wildly inaccurate.

Yup, I have seen him throw the ball 85+ yards in the air during pregame, problem is he can't get the ball within 10 yards of a target from over 10 yards. :(
