This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Great Kingdom went from being mostly boring to being a Failed State run by the undead, which was pretty awesome.

More maps:
Tons of free material on Dyson Logos's blog.
But his print collections are also worth getting (Dyson's Delves 1+2, Cartographic Review 2014, 2015, 2016).
Most of his maps are not big, sprawling (mega)dungeons but smaller, self-contained locations aimed at a single session of play.
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.

In terms of playability I think the original Great Kingdom offers more variety, since you can have intrigue as well as warfare, and it would be relatively easy to present it as relatively normal place "We're not evil - you Nyrondals are evil!" which allows for more historical-feeling scenarios.  Failed-state horror zone Great Kingdom only allows for fighting undead.

In general I like the 1983 Greyhawk, with its wide variety of evil states, a lot more than From the Ashes Greyhawk with Iuz's evil empire, undead Great Kingdom and general Grimdark feel.

But Greyhawk in general has a problem in that the scale at 30 miles/hex is far too big, most of the map is basically empty. I halved the scale for Forgotten Realms when I ran that, which worked very well, and I suspect 15 miles/hex would work a lot better for the Oerik map, too.

The map being empty I see as quite a good thing as it allows for plenty of space for self generated content without clashing with "canon".

Speaking of maps, this is all but an essential source of inspiration:

I'm going to throw out a couple of random generator sites:

Donjon
Abulafia

They've been pretty helpful for our group when running sandboxes.

I am actually digging the 1983 map's general emptiness. This is what I think a setting should offer. As someone said on the previous page, I can drop any map or module in just about anywhere I want without screwing it up. I put Keep on the Borderlands not too far from Orlane, I use Welsh Piper's tables to fill in hexes that TSR didn't publish anything for or I don't have anything to drop in (i.e. most of them), and Wizard Dawn can help me out in a pinch.

Every time I think the Forgotten Realms can\'t be a dumber setting, I get proven to be an unimaginative idiot.

RPGPundit

When I played From-the-Ashes Greyhawk, I ran the Great Kingdom as a kingdom of intelligent undead; evil, yes, but intelligent and independent evil that had a lot of subtleties.

Quote from: fearsomepirate;970017I am running a sandbox campaign in Greyhawk at my local FLGS. Here's the hidden secret: I'm not very creative. Here's what I've got:

1. All the 1e Greyhawk modules
2. Welsh Piper's random tables printed out in a binder
3. The 1e boxed set
4. A couple Basic modules
5. Wizard Dawn's hex-filler bookmarked.

If you have some favorite adventures/modules/other tools that you think it would behoove me to drop into this map (folks are starting in Hochoch, near the Grand Duchy of Geoff) please let me know. Really anything that makes it easier for me to let people wander around the kingdoms, making trouble, would be much appreciated.

Tools-wise, I think you should check out Kellri's netbooks at http://kellri.blogspot.com/ as well as TSR's Rogues Gallery (which is also good, but IIRC it's mostly-superceded by Kellri's work).

Modules-wise, I think you can slot lots into Greyhawk, depending on your vision for it.  What kinds of games are you planning to run/do you and your players like?

If you're specifically looking for content in/around Hochoch/Geoff, you should dig into Jason Zavoda's Greyhawk index @ http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/encyclopedia-2003-08-31.txt  If you dig around in my Greyhawk Links page @ http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_links.html you'll likely find some other things to catch your eye, too.

You can certainly use some of my Castle Greyhawk maps @ http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_castle_grodog.html as stand-alone dungeons/levels.  Dungeon is certainly also worth checking out---see http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_dungeon_adventures.html for Greyhawk-specific adventures in Dungeon, but don't let that prevent you from hacking something else into the Flanaess.

Quote from: Voros;970018The 2e City of Greyhawk boxset. I notice some hate it but I thought Jean Wells' 2e Valley of the Mage was pretty damn good.

Sargent's The Night Below was originally meant for GH but was made generic at the last minute. Since it is in the Underdark it is easy to put almost anywhere. His City of Skulls is also quite good.

I can second that emotion on "The Night Below" boxed set. Very cool "UnderOearth" material.

There is a book with longer adventures, but the majority are two pages on separate cards.
