This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This thread is to suggest weird and crazy features in a fantasy world that were the products of one or more gods doing something to the landscape, architecture, etc.

Extra credit if you explain the context of why they did it.

Isn't that the premise of Scarred Lands? I remember reading the bestiaries years ago and being amazed that most of the monsters were engineered for some specific purpose or had complex interactions with parties.

Lightning bugs were created by the Verdant God as he pursued a Nymph into deep, lush forest on a warm summer's night. He got tired of stumbling in his chase and commanded the plentiful insects of dusk to "Glow! But don't scare her away..." So enchanted with the scene, she slowed her escape and turned to face the Verdant God, "... for me?"

"To catch mere glimpses of your beauty, so that I can bare it."

And with that, we celebrate young couples a-courting during the steamy days of summer, re-enacting the chase that ended in tenderness. :)

The Moon: It is actually whats left of the original Earth after the younger gods fought over the elder gods creation of a new race. Said race was wiped out and the planet was laid to total ruin before the exhausted elder gods woke up and beat the heck out of the younger gods. After the smoke cleared they created a new world and placed the dead one in orbit as a reminder.

The Nameless Continent: A vaugly T-shaped land. The first explorer to set foot on the continent got the impression that the place "had" a name once. The place is charged with ambient magic so its become a major home for the various magically endowed professions. Its also the home of quite a few undead and a major resort for spectres and ghosts. More unusual though is that attempts to map the place are discouraged as invariably every time someone finishes a completed map, they go insane and destroy it. So everyone knows the continent is vaugly T shaped and partial maps are common. Just dont try to combine maps or make your own complete one. The reason is that the land is the body of a dead god sprawled out on its back in the ocean. This was an evil god whos essence was snuffed out and the body laid out on the world he tried to destroy. The gods want him to remain forgotten. The outline is visible only from orbit, or really good chartography. Eventually the accumulation of soil and errosion will blur the shape and the madness curse will be lifted.

In some worlds, the gods created elves, for no reason that any non-elf could ever discern;).

Yeah, I know it's weird, right:)?

Also, some of them created a land where only orcs could live, and then everyone wonders why there's always orcs living over there;).

As a final note, the Splitter looked upon the world, which was once round, and split it in two hemispheres, which he lay on their sides on the backs of four elephants. Since then, ships can fall off the Edge of the World.
Also, the two hemispheres, sitting side by side, look like buttocks, which is cause for no end of jokes for visitors from other worlds. There are rumours that at least one interdimensional war began that way:D!

In my campaign, a Titan died and his corpse created one of the biggest mountain ranges (because *magic*!). He successfully fought extra-terrestrial occupiers, which were my setting's Atlanteans or Romans, but was mortally wounded in the process.

Mystara's Hollow World is probably up there on the weird-o-meter.

Kidnap races and cultures and transplant them to the inside of the hollow planet in a crazy-quilt patchwork of eras and cultures and races. With some special effects in place to keep each from developing or changing much in a mad dash to preserve them forever.

Yup. Hollow World is awesome. One of the best things about Mystara!

Sounds like PJFarmer's World of Tiers series...Read the first one. Liked it. Getting around to the others!!! The "Gods" are crazy there. More like superbeings.

Anyone who never read Hollow World should go get it (I believe it's available as one of the TSR classics on OBS). it was probably the most under-rated setting around.
