This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Why do all Superhero RPGs suck?

So let it be written, so let it be done:D! Or in plain words, it is true.

Also, I'm posting this from a Linux-based interface;).

The use of the equivocal term was intentional. :)

Willie the Duck

Quote from: CRKrueger;937698I hear ya Duckman, but to be honest, this thread needed a derailment. :D

Ha! Y'know, that throws me every time. Willie the Duck is a dragon (true name Kizarvexius) from Larry Elmore's Snarfquest comic who has amnesia and thinks he's a duck. So in my mind, my internet handle is one of a dragon, not a duck. I guess kinda like the guy named Robert who's always been a Rob or Robert and someone walks up and calls them Bob. "Uh... are you talking to me?"  :D

QuoteBut back on topic in the broadest sense of the term...are superhero movies and television sucking all the oxygen out of US entertainment?  Alan Moore seems to think so, and he's far from alone.  People are getting tired of Studio-approved Superhero fare.  Think of the work Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr. could have done in a world without the MCU.

Picture a world where every X-man or Wolverine movie is replaced with one where Hugh Jackman gives performances like The Prestige, The Fountain or Prisoners.  Robert Downey Jr. gives performances like Chaplin, Zodiac, The Judge. Stewart is doing movies like The Lion in Winter or Christ anything from any of his stage performances. That world, objectively, is a better place. :D

Well, to be fair, Stewart has kinda made clear that he wants to spend his 70s watching Beavis and Butthead reruns, swear and make drug jokes as Walter Blunt, make internet memes with Ian McKellen, do cameos on Seth MacFarlane shows, and bang his half-his-age wife (no judgment, it sounds like a sweet life). I'm not sure cutting the X-men series out of his schedule would change his highbrow output.

QuoteCrying that popculture geeks are fapping to Black Widow instead of Kagome though...that's just being a 6th grader. ;)

That's just too perfect to be accidental, but I just want to clarify-- you are aware that Scarlett Johansson's next movie coming out is a live action rendition of Ghosts in the Shell, right? They may not be fapping to Kagome, but they will be to Kusanagi.

Except the hassle of listening to the Linux geeks tell them all about it, right?
(I use Linux at work every day, but I also recognize that we're almost up there with vegans and PX90 enthusiasts in the whole "How do you know if someone is a _____?" "Don't worry, they'll tell you." joke) :D

You should hear my dad talk about it. He's a lighthouse keeper on an island just north of Vancouver Island on the west coast. He uses Linux to track ship positions, something you would NEVER want to do with a system that included forced reboots. However if you are using proprietary software, like I do for music, then I prefer Windows because I have licences to manage and don't trust WINE, even though it's way better than it once was.

Ok, that's why that name's familiar.

He started doing X-men the year he turned 60.  That's a decade and a half of pre-"retired and don't give a fuck anymore" output we didn't see get shunted into something better.

Yeah...but immaterial to the point I was busting Jersey's chops over, namely that he's just sore in the slats because his personal geekdom is still geekery and not pop culture yet...unless you're thinking that ScarJo as Kusunagi is going to start an anime renaissance as movie studios decide to exchange western comic for eastern.

Yeah, you Linux guys can sometimes be pretty annoying if you can't fathom that yeah, if you have the skills, you can build yourself a car or motorcycle in your garage that's better than anything Detroit ever produced...but it's not scalable and if you think Joe Commuter is going to take your kitbash car with it's custom clockwork transmission to work every day...you're kinda fooling yourself. :D ( I have a Linux file/web server that's literally been up for years, so I'm just kidding...kinda.;))

I've never seen a good superhero comic on the other hand.

The last good anime was Robotech.

Nope, just thought the use of Black Widow as an example was too perfect.

Agreed. It's all immaterial. Linux runs my work software on servers. That's why I use it, and for no other reason. Even most of the people blabbing on and on about this or that customizability of performance benefit know that it's actually meaningless to the purpose to which they put it. Internet oneupsmanship is just that, oneupsmanship.

Quote from: Krimson;937701I can kind of sympathize with Doc Sammy with regards to comics.
As do I. As a fan of NOT-superhero comics there's always that moment when I go to the comic shop and sulk to the back corner ghetto where the stuff I like has been shuttled. I've read good superhero comics... but there's just soooooo much to wade through to find them. Kind of like finding a good D20 book on the shelves during the OGL glut.

Anime and manga do offer me a wealth of good serious choices... but they too get shunted out of the mainstream shelving. Most of the time these days I assume mainstream comic shops won't have much to offer me... same as game stores don't have much, unless I want 40K or MtG cards... and same as how I keep having to tell my pals I'm not interested in going to see the new X-Men/Superman/Avengers movie. It's a glut that washes a good bit of decent or better content out of the public's view.

That said, I do like the concept of heroes... heroes with powers... even heroes with powers in weird costumes. But even that description leaves the door open to a LOT of stuff most folks aren't going to think are 'superheroes' (is Ultraman a superhero? Kamen Rider? Dick Tracy?)... so what does define a character as a superhero?
If I want to play The Shadow and Joe wants to play Green Lantern... we aren't picturing the same sort of game at all.

I liked Macross. I have no idea what this Robotech thing you speak of is. :D

Maybe true but I like hacking distros to get it the way I like it. I mostly use Ubuntu though I have used other Distros. The next rig I make, I might want to use Ubuntu with the Cinnamon UI and maybe some stuff from SteamOS because I have lots and lots of Steam games.

I usually just buy Manga from Amazon these days. There is a comic store in town that has an entire floor dedicated to it though. As for game stores, I feel your pain. Fortunately I have the largest game store in North America as my FLGS, but it's not that close. I was excited when I heard there was one in walking distance, only to find card games and an RPG shelf with less books than I have on one of my shelves at home, and they were D&D 5e books I already own. >.<

I actually prefer the Mospeada / New Generation part to Macross.  Don't get me wrong, Macross is pretty good, but Mospeada / New Generation is better.

Yeah.  BSD is great if you have the time and experience to get it just right, but if you want an "out of the box" experience I recommend Manjaro Linux, which is based on Arch Linux.  Install once, and you're good to go.

Well, hey, you could meet in the middle--one of you could play Golden-Age Pulp Batman who shoots Monster-Men with his biplane-mounted machine gun, and the other could play Alan Scott.

(Sounds fun to me.)

***

One good reason to try a superhero roleplaying game--your war stories you tell after the fact tend to sound more interesting, especially to bystanders.

Example:

"Remember that time we killed Batman?"

"Oh, man, what a clusterfuck--I didn't even mean to! Fucking exploding dice!"

"Superman was pissed."

"I thought he let you off lightly by just breaking both your arms."

"I can't believe Superman broke both my arms! He's Superman!"

Good times, good times.
"But I thought we were the good guys!"
"No, we\'re not the good guys. We\'re the pigs from Animal Farm."

Kent Allard was an aviator. Hal Jordan was a test pilot. Put them in planes. In space. Then have them solve a murder mystery. In space.
