This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Rifts] What books do you use in your game?

Man, I've used a ton of books in my RIFTS campaigns.  It would be easier to list the one's I've disliked so much I'd never use them. Off the top of my head, I hated RIFTS England, and the south america books. I thought those were awful. Africa was pretty bad.

I was especially disappointed with the south america books, because in the Robotech setting, all the setting material on South America was fantastic.

System issues aside. What bothered me is that instead of focusing on North America first in terms of sourcebook development at first. They went everywhere else. When more often than not many campaigns are started in North america. There is only so many times " a random rift drops you off in Atlantis, England, etc". Or one starts the campaign say in Japan from the start. Unlike many I like the South America books. It's what the damage and MDC values for both weapons and item should have been. No more having a gun on a tank doing less damage and outranged by a laser rifle.

I use RUE, the GMG, Source Book One, and Vampire Kingdoms are my go to books for new campaigns. I usually will only add a World Book if the campaign moves in that direction. I got the Mystic China books in my Christmas grab bag so I want try to get the campaign there.

While I actually liked the South America Rifts books, I agree with you that Robotech books like Zentraedi Breakout had a lot more (and better) setting material.

Yeah, it was really impressive. While the ones in RIFTS seemed absurd and stereotypical.

Bloody Stupid Johnson

Most of the "dimension books" I view as not having much to do with Rifts really, and just having Rifts stuck on it for extra sales.
Notably, the Phase World stuff and Wormwood.

That said, I'd use totally non-Rifts Palladium stuff or perhaps even non-Palladium stuff in Rifts, not an issue. If someone wanted to convert their Gamma World mutant to Rifts say, or even their D&D fighter, I wouldn't really have an issue with it.(Though its a while since I've run it).

Spinachcat

I've played Wormwood campaign as a stand alone setting and its good stuff. If Rifts isn't metal enough for a group, Wormwood certainly turns it to 11 and snaps the nob off.

Phase World is Rifts in Spaaaaaaaace. I like it, but I've mostly been a player for Phase World instead of a GM.

It's funny but I found Phase World kind of dumb. On the other hand, I thought Mutants In Orbit was freaking awesome!
