This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The votes are in, and nearly unanimously my players have voted for High Seas Adventure and Secret Societies as the major themes of our short 7th Sea campaign next year.

Can anyone point me to some good ship naming resources and island generators?

Thanks!

You guys actually vote on Themes?  I mean granted, short-lived campaign, so obviously not a Living World, instead based around a Story Arc, yadda yadda, etc. but actually voting on Themes before you make the campaign...I guess if you're going for Story may as well know what kind.

What were the possible Themes they could vote on?  How did this all play out?  This is something my groups wouldn't desire at all, so just wondering how it all went down.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Living World / Short Arc / Known Themes are not mutually exclusive. It's my default mode of campaigns.

Eh, with a short arc, where we all know what the "Themes" are, how Living can the world be?  Not alive enough to do anything long-term, nor alive enough to really go off Theme.   I mean there's great benefits to short-term Story Arc campaigns, but openness/freedom of action and long-term consistency just can't be part of that, by simple definition.  We all agree to color between the lines that are much closer and narrower.

CK,

The themes were pretty general:
High Seas adventurers exploring the wilds of the Widow's Sea
Free Heroes of one of the great cities of Theah, foiling plots against the people and the crown
Secret society members delving into the dark secrets of the past
Military heroes

i asked them to rank their two favorites. 1 and 3 were nearly unanimous.

Normally, I wouldn't have done this but since we are taking break from Witch Hunter for a few months, I wanted to get away from the wandering monster hunters that we'd been playing for 3 years. Plus, I really want to showcase 7th Sea's Story mechanic and (given our short time frame) wanted the players on the same page so take a everyone's "stories" got attention.

Sure I could have a theme at them. In fact they voted pretty much exactly as I hoped they might. But since it's such a short window and the game is fairly sandboxey, I felt getting the players input would be helpful and more fun. Plus, I'm not really sitting on any big 7th Sea ideas that have been burning a hole in my brain for years.

By contrast, I had also offered up 5e as an option and already had a plan in mind for that one.

So now I'm in full prep mode. I've cobbled together a random island generator from the few I've found online. I've assembled my list of ship names, gathering some pirate nicknames, and starting to put together my 3 hooks. I want to try a few new GMing techniques I don't normally use. It should be an interesting experience and I'm hoping to learn a few new tricks I can carry over to our WItch Hunter campaign when we resume in August.

But when it comes to dressing resources, random generators, and sandbox tools, you can't beat the OSR community.
And regardless of how narrativist the game wants me to be, I'm building my toolbox the same way I have for years.

Anyone know where I can find a good list of "dungeon dressings" for a ship?  Above deck or below?

Start by googling "Tall Ship" and go from there.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.
