Quote from: Spinachcat;730859I suspect metaplot "dominance" is an issue of RPG gamers-as-readers of splats instead of RPG gamers-as-players.

I read plenty of splats, but what bleeds into my games is only what I sounds most fun for my game. I fuck with canon timelines and run "alternate history" for any RPG that has lots of splats.
Haha, you should talk to your average fan of The Dark Eye / Das Schwarze Auge, a game notorious for its metaplotty and railroady approach.

Quote from: Spinachcat;730859But to throw around invectives like "pretentious fucks" and "juvenile" is just more "You game wrong!!!" which is nonsense. The hobby can be inclusive enough to embrace playstyles beyond whatever your favorite style or mine might be.

Quote from: James Gillen;730924Quite so, even if one doesn't assume that every Vampire fan is a pretentious fuck.  ;)
I got a lot of Swiny "you game wrong" and  "our gaming is better and deeper" from the WoD books, though, which  probably explains why there were relatively many "pretentious fucks" and "juveniles" among fans of the game. But it *is* a generalization; there were also plenty of decent enough folks.

Well, metaplot got axed in the WoD ten years ago. Problem was that it almost didn't have any setting background at all. Now it is ambiguous (or vague) in a way that it offers bits and pieces of history or mythology here and there. The Ventrue for example can be descendents from Crones, but they could also be a bloodline from the Gangrel according to another myth. Others say the Gangrel were a bloodline from the Ventrue and not the otherway around etc.

Yep, met those people too. "Go play some D&D if you don't gonna play it properly!". It's also because the books want you to play dramatic. Even if you play a procedural, they want you to add some dramatic scenes. During the years it got better though. One of the motivations to join the Carthians (Anarchs 2.0) in Requiem 2.0 is "Because you want to blow things up.". That's different from the whole "Finding a purpose in you bleak life of boredom, ennui and cruelty." that was originally Requiem's schtick.

Oh btw, hi Erik, it's me in all my awesomeness! The roaming red devil on a rampage.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

Quote from: jan paparazzi;730999Wasn't it just a social phenomenom like Magic the Gathering? A lot of people playing it who would normally never play a CCG or tabletop RPG? Just mainstream audience. I think now only the more hardcore audience is left.

Yes. A lot of times the WW swine like to talk about how for so many people a WW game was their first RPG who would never have considered playing any other RPG.  The problem is most of those people never did play any other RPG after, and then quit playing WW games too.

Thread..back from the dead.

I was trolling Kickstarter today and I found that Mark Rein DOT Hagen's "I am Zombie" RPG has a Kickstarter ending today. Then I remembered that we had talked about this exact game a couple years ago and I dug up this thread from the archives.

Here is the current I AM ZOMBIE: TOXICITY kickstarter.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/make-believegames/toxicity-i-am-zombie-rpg/description

It advertises itself as OLD SCHOOL...rather repetitively.

Anyone back the original KS or this one?

Anything worth saying about this RPG?

The Butcher

Jesus, how many red flags can you stick into a KS?

I haven't really kept track of this but I noticed some I Am Zombie stuff among this week's new RPG releases at Games Lore. There's something called a Field Guide and a Play Kit. It seems to be from the original KS.

It looks like the same thing advertised as the last update of the original KS.  Possibly more refined in presentation.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

WTF is with that guy jumping on the "Old School" bandwagon?

Well if there's anyone who deserves the title Father of the OSR more than Ron Edwards it would be Mark Rein-symbol-Hagen.

Well, seeing what WoD became recently, I can't say this is any surprising. ;)

I didn't think that the original I Am Zombie was ever even finished. I thought he just dropped the ball on it. I thought about getting it, for old times' sake, even though I found the zombie genre boring even when it was just getting popular and now it's as rotten as the zombies themselves. It didn't seem to matialize though.

Apparently it started appearing on FLGS shelves recently, as I posted earlier on:

No idea how exactly this new KS is related to that.

Quote from: Ronin;665020No there was fairly recently a movie with a sentient zombie. He befriends a girl and keeps her safe from other zombies. I cant remember the name. Im sure someone here will point it out.

Wayyy back there was an episode of MONSTERS! that was about sentient zombies and a girl's boyfriend becoming one. It played up prejudice as a theme too. Which was funny as all the characters were black. Which was likely the point.

Think theres alother old one called "My Boyfriends Back" wasnt there?

After 2 or more years of Hagen BSing and stalling. Most of Democracy's KS backers have their game now. Possibly all now. The others. Who knows.
