This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So I only just started watching this, and it's fucking amazing (and hilarious).

How would you run it as an RPG campaign?

Doom

Isn't there a StarGate RPG somewhere? I'd try to adapt that, tossing in some Toon.

A nice education blog.

Pretty close to freeform, maybe with Risus. I mean, you have characters who save the planet from a giant alien head reality show by "Getting Schwifty".

In its time, that was a fucking great Comedy RPG.  And it might work, though I'm wondering if it might not be a little too archaic at this point?

Probably FATE of some sort. I hear Atomic Robo has some rules for making scientific discovery, but it's not necessary. Maybe add a Nihilism or other kind of Mental stress track.

This is the best animated show on TV in my opinion. Blisteringly funny (for my tastes - it's a full on bullseye).

Tales of the Floating Vagabond would be PERFECT. I loved that game.

If I had to do it with a "current" system - I'd go Savage Worlds.

Tahmoh

Cypher system with bits of the strange and numenera blended in as needed for weirdness, the random inventions side fits the system perfectly.

Also worth mentioning that the show is listed in the inspiration table for all 3 games so monte cook clearly has good taste in cartoons :)

camazotz

This is currently my favorite show, hands down. I'd probably play it straight using Risus or Cypher.

There's a new edition that's just about ready to roll, delayed by the author's health issues.

Daytrippers seems designed for this sort of setting but is probably too storygamey for your tastes.
The Hardboiled GMshoe\'s Office: game reviews, Randomworlds Q&A logs, and more!

Randomworlds TTRPG chat: friendly politics-free roleplaying chat!

i'll find out in a few weeks; if I'm not mistaken Daytrippers is next on my review list after "Far Away Land" (which I'm working on right now at a glacial pace).

I am a fan! Rubber baby buggy bumbers!

Well, I guess freeform would be the best fit for this show.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

So exactly how would these games capture the feel of Rick & Morty, and which feels are we trying to capture? Lets see...

  • Most of it boils down to the kinds of (often self-destructive) dialog and situations the characters create. So we need a system which either helps to emulate those, isn't trying to emulate the opposite of those, or at least doesn't interfere with them taking place.

  • Death is just as meaningless as everything else. Other universe you could just pop in, or your clone, or perhaps you were a robot all along. So we need a system where dying is not a stake.

  • You can eventually avoid the consequences of your actions, but in the meantime things will just keep getting worse (or better) until you do. So we need a system that builds up situation until the entire ball of wax gets resolved.

  • Oh, and keep in mind this is a character driven show, and the setting only exists to drive their narrative forward. Even Futurama and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy have more foundational setting you can play around with. So we need a system which builds the setting around the characters, and not the other way around.

So in the kind of delightful irony I delight in (and which fits the R&M vibe), the most effective RPGs for this kind of thing would be things like Fate, Cortex Plus, Powered by the Apocalypse, Prime Time Adventures, Dying Earth, Nobilis, and all those other wretched 'story games' people like to hate here. In fact, most traditional RPGs do exactly the opposite of what's required.

RPGPundit

Over the Edge might work.

Yeah in YouTube channel wisecrack did a episode explaining Rick and Morty.  Story games would fit well with this show as it is meaningless.  No insult intended, but a major influence of this show is H.P. Lovecraft and his Call of Cthulhu.  Which the theme for those writings is how meaningless they are.
