This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

AD&D 2E V. 1E Treasure Tables

What is the difference between the AD&D 1E and 2E treasure matrix?

I ask because I have the 1st printing versions of the 2E PHB and DMG, but a 2nd printing MM, along with the Gygax Memorial Reprints of 1E. So I don't have the 2E DMG with the treasure tables.

I don't have access to AD&D 2nd at the moment but perhaps this will help. It is an analysis of AD&D and OD&D treasure types.

Part I which goes into OD&D treasure types.

Part II for AD&D

I feel out of all the editions the OD&D setup is the one where the logic is easily followed and makes the most sense. The additional treasure types in AD&D start to feel arbitary. And later editions including 3.X and after are focused to much on "appropriate" rewards at the power level of the monster.

OD&D in contrast feel more like world building. Yes it has some tough monster get better treasure than weaker monster. But overall it feel more organic.

And then I discovered that the '89 DMG does, indeed have the treasure table at all. Never mind!

I've always liked using the 1e tables.

They seem more robust than the 2.1 (1989) version.

What's the difference between the '89 and '96 versions?

The 1e tables are great, although one must be careful that one doesn't inadvertently put the Hand of Vecna in some kobold's treasure chest unless one wants it there! :D

I LOVE the way the treasure tables can sometimes put totally unexpected items in low-level treasure.

But technically, I don't think it's possible for relics to end up in a randomly-rolled treasure horde, if I remember correctly.

No, no it's not.  Just having a bit of fun.

But other things can, potentially.  Kobolds guarding a pile of 1000cp...aaaaand a +5 Holy Avenger, for example (that kills every Kobold dumb enough to touch it)

Hrm, I thought "Artifact or Relic" was like a 1% chance on one of the miscellaneous magic tables.
