This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[SWN] Starvation Cheap Kickstarter is live

Here's a better than usual reason to quit whining about RPGnet: Sine Nomine has a new Kickstarter up, for SWN's answer to Book 1: Mercenary.

This may be as good a moment as any to remind everyone that I don't even play SWN but I raid these books for ideas. Gotta love the random tables. ;)

Take my money!!

Starvation Cheap is an odd title, but SineNomine hasn't published anything that I haven't enjoyed. I am already using Silent Legions for idea mining and I'm really excited to see what KC does with a military theme for SWN.

BTW, I've played SWN and its very good in actual play. The only reason I haven't dumped Classic Traveller for SWN is because CT has been my go-to for so long that I speak my houseruled CT as I do my houseruled OD&D. If I wasn't so attached to Trav, SWN would be my default scifi RPG.

As is, I am really thinking about dumping Dark Heresy for SWN + Silent Legions and just using 40k as the background. My players got nothing out of the increased complexity of Dark Heresy compared to playing CT or SWN.

Just downloaded the beta! My weekend just got so much more fun!

Thank you Butcher for posting about the KS!!

Looks cool. Makes me want to run a Hammers Slammers game:)

Hell yeah!  I loved running my last SWN campaign, and this new book would be a nice addition for the next one.

Apparition

Backed, and will upgrade once the hardcover option undoubtedly becomes available.

He must have the best doctor in the world, since he seem to be the only person immune from getting health issues after a successful Kickstarter.

Shipyard Locked

Has he updated the PDF of the main SWN rules with all the errata, proofreading and rule fixes he talked about? I haven't checked in a while.

In any case, this is sure to be an inspiring supplement for what I've been planning.

According to the latest issue The Game Designer Journal of Health, setting limited, attainable stretch goals has been shown to have a strong positive effect on preventing health problems. The affect is increased when the subject also has a playtest/beta version available to backers upon pledging.

On a related note over at The Design Mechanism, they have announced that when their Glorantha Kickstarter goes live, there will be no stretch goals whatsoever, which makes me happy.

Anyway, I have no use for Starvation Cheap at the moment. I'm pledging for at least the PDF anyway, as the second I need a SF military book RPG, it's doubtful their will be anything else more useful. Even if I never need it, I have easily gotten more than $20-30 value out of the free material Kevin Crawford has put out. He's made the small list of designers where I'll buy whatever he puts out.

I agree - Sine Nomine do the best Kickstarters out there and have earned their support.

"Starvation cheap" is a reference to Rudyard Kipling's poem "Tommy"

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms what guard you while you sleep
 Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Well, is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's the "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
When the drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
It's the "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

He's also earned the ability to make sideways Kipling references in the 21st century. :)

Well, you  know what they say: "having most of your fucking work done BEFORE you start the goddamn kickstarter keeps the doctor away".

you left off the rest of the quote, "... so your backers don't track you down and break your kneecaps. (or more commonly, bitch and moan about it on TBP)"
