This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Funny stuff that happened in 5E.

I was running DnD 5e yesterday for 6 players.
The characters currently at 2nd level.

Without going into the whole campaign and scenario, the party ended up in a roadside Inn at a fairly remote location.

As it turned out, there's a bit of an undead outbreak in this area and a Necromancer is responsible for this.

So anyway, it's in the evening in this 2 storeyed Inn and they're expecting an assault any time.
They set up various NPCs to guard some of the top rooms and they patrol corridors.
The ground floor is barricaded at windows and doors and some people are guarding there too.

As it turns out, the Necromancer sends in a Ghoul in a top window (the walls are easy to climb and even though the windows are boarded up, it's not done very well on this window. No-one checked how well it was done.
There is an NPC guarding this room, patrolling the area, but the ghoul gets him and paralyses him. Then the Necro turns him into a zombie.

By this time, a PC, who is patrolling the general area as well (more or less) , after initially making some terrible perception checks, finally hears mumbling and movement that sounds kind of suspicious.

A fight ensues in a corridor near this room.. and soon the Dwarf Fighter is joined by the Ranger, a Human fighter and shortly after that the Cleric.

After a bit of a close call with the ranger getting paralysed by the Ghoul, they finally manage to dispatch it.
The Ranger then runs downstairs to help out, as it's pretty crowded up there and it seems to be going ok.

The Necro retreats with his zombie back into the room and the necro exits the window.
There's a bit of a fight with the zombie, which doesn't go that well initially (due to some bad rolling on the part of the players) until the cleric turns up and does a turn undead.
So the Zombie makes a save and rolls a 1.. Oops..
I decide it literally dives out the window in fear from the 1st floor (about 15 feet up)

Meanwhile... downstairs, there's a few zombies trying to bash in the front door of the Inn and they're slowly breaking through...

As I'm counting off rounds and using a battle-mat, I i know where everyone is.

At the point the Zombie dives out the windows, which is right above the Inn front door (the Necro has scarpered by this point) the Front door is smashed in mostly. However the party fairly quickly dispatches a couple of the zombies via missile fire and spells and good old fashioned melee weapons.
The downstairs group decides to run out of the front door to dispatch the remaining zombies, which have been pushed back.

So the first 2 out the door are the barbarian wielding his Greataxe and the Ranger slipping out with a bow to get some good shots...

However, precisely at that moment, the Zombie jumps out of the above window and falls down in front of the door.

I decide that this justifies a chance to dodge, as the characters are going to be pretty combat aware, so I give them a DEX save.

The Barbarian makes the save no problems and dodges out of the way of the falling Zombie..
Unluckily, the Ranger failed the DEX save miserably (and no inspiration point left for a re-roll) and takes a hefty 2D6 damage from a falling zombie right on top of her...  lol...

It was pretty darn funny at the time as I didn't plan it, it was just how the circumstances turned out..

So, what sort of funny stuff has happened with you in 5E?

Exploderwizard

Just the other night I was running a group of players new to 5E through the starter set adventure. This was session #2 and the players had already survived the ambush, tracked the goblins back to their hideout and taken out the couple of sentries at the entrance.

They had left one of the sentries alive, bound and gagged in the little watch thicket after asking a few questions.

They enter the hideout and begin checking things out. Shortly past the entrance they hear some growling and smell wet dog coming from a chamber to the East up a couple steps. The forest gnome wizard (being the only one in the party with dark vision) goes up the short steps to investigate.

The gnome gets up there and sees 3 wolves chained to a large boulder and they approach him growling. The rest of the party is waiting in the hall down the steps keeping watch.

as a forest gnome, he could speak with the wolves so he starts talking to them. The wolves strongly convey that they want FOOD and that the gnome looks and smells like FOOD. Conversations with wolves preoccupied with thoughts of food aren't usually very productive. The gnome decides to start tossing the dried meat from his rations to the wolves as he tries to convince them to help. He casts a grease spell on the rock  to which their chains are attached and, coaxing them with dried meat, try to convince them to pull free.

Two out the three wolves successfully get free of the rock. They then advance on the gnome wanting more food. At that point he had run out of dried meat and had to think fast as they were about to pounce on him.

So what did he do? He pointed at the entrance to the hall where his companions were waiting and yelled "FOOD" in the wolf language! :rotfl:

The free wolves went charging down the steps past the gnome, smelling the rest of the party and tore into them. The party was on high alert and wasn't surprised but the two free wolves had the human fighter down by round two.

The fighter didn't make it. :(

The rest of the group asked the gnomes player what the hell was he thinking? He intended to feed the captive goblin to the wolf, but forgot that they had left him well outside the cave and that his companions were considerably closer. :D

#2
A rather bemusingly disasterous swamp adventure with my human Warlock, Kefra's elf Druid, and Jannet's halfling Ranger.

We are exploring a swamp region and get literally jumped by a bunch of bullywugs and some giant frogs. Me and Kef take on the frog men and Jan confidently handles the frogs. Only three of them. No problem.

Bullywugs in 5e by the way are a real pain now with their extra attacks. Anyhow we wade in and start finding this little fact out the hard way. Still. We are doing good overall. Jan meanwhile is turning the first of the giant frogs into a pincushion while the other two are hopping closer.

Combat proceeds and we are still doing well enough. Me and Kefra force the bullywugs to come to us and we try to focus on one at a time and position ourselves so they cant flank us easily. Jan takes down her second frog with more arrow fire. And here is where things go badly. The last frog hops into range at last and makes a grab for the halfling. Giant frog hits and secures a grapple as Jan fails her STR roll. Ok. Just stuck there. Still no problem. She just has to get her shortsword out.

Next round and we are still being aggressively poked by the surviving bullywugs. Jannet gets her initiative first and lets the frog have it. Or so she had planned. Disadvantage from being restrained. Both attacks fail. The frog though has, yep, advantage and lands a hit. The halfling is swallowed whole!

Next round. Jan is now in the frogs stomach, restrained and blinded, luckily disadvantage doesnt stack! Unluckily for her. She fails both attacks again. Elsewhere the druidess and sorcerer are goggling at what just happened while trying to put down the remaining frogs ASAP! Wasteful, but I drop Arms of Hadar behind the frogs and it takes down all but one of the remaining frog men which Kef then dispatches. The ranger fed frog gives a "urp" and then turns and makes a dash for the water as it starts digesting its meal.

Next round Kermit is hippity hopping happily off for the water and I try to blast it with Eldrich Blast. A hit with both! For a measly 2 points damage each. Inside said blasted frog Jan of course fails both attack tries while stewing. Kefra is applying healing to the two of us as we got poked quite a bit.

This follows up with me running after the retreating frog, blasting it one more time and still not doing enough, Jan missing some more and saying very unflattering things about frogs in halfling from inside a frog. And the frog making its last move and making a dive into the swamp.

Suffice to say we lost the halfling. To her credit Jan struggled on two more rounds before succumbing. She never connected even once. Disadvantage had it in for her that day. yeesh!

Later in the same session Kefra, while out ahead scouting in the form of a giant swamp snake, was pounced and eaten by a giant swamp weasel in a desperately close battle. It was one of those days.

snooggums

While playing LMoP the group had a tough encounter with some undead and decided to hide in an adjacent room in the mine. Upon entering the room I gave a very brief description of both doors being barred in separate sentences and that the room appeared to be empty.

A few rounds of undead scratching at the door the party is surprised by a bunch of Bugbears. The moment the trap is sprung the resident Warlock player shouts "We are here to save you!" and then says that he was getting ready to say there was a trap since the doors were both barred from the inside.

I tell him that he can roll for Persuasion and a strong roll and high skill bonus later the Bugbears don't act on their surprise round and the Warlock explains that the party will help them leave the cave if they don't cause trouble for the party. The hungry and desperate Bugbears did accompany the players further into the cave, ate a fireball from the Flameskull, and finally ran away from some giant spiders when they had enough.
