Note: I'm not saying or implying Tolkien is a racist by any means.  Wanting to create a rich mythology for your race doesn't automatically mean you're racist against every other race, despite what the internet would have you believe.  Just that such a claim can easily be hijacked by those who are racist.

Its themes certainly aren't, but surface details are. Tolkien's scathing letter to a German publisher who expressed interest in the work making the mistake of calling it "Aryan" should clear any of that BS up

I always found it odd that people put that on Tolkien either pro or con that he was a racist, without first checking their own prejudices at the door. It's far easier to blame some "tribal identity" in either case.

As an Asian, when I read the LotR and Silmarillion... at least a dozen times, it never offended me that the Easterners sided with Sauron anymore than it offends me that my own people bombed Pearl Harbor as an act of war... over half a century ago.

Tolkien's Orcs are Orcs, they're not real. America has done horrible things to innocent people - like every other nation has whether you like it or not. The world ain't flat.
