This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Critias

I wrote an adventure, Super Brawl Sunday, all focused on the Shadowrun game Urban Brawl.  Seattle was hosting the Super Brawl that year, but was grouchy because neither of their home teams were involved.  Some spiteful fans got their money together and hired some thugs to take out their frustrations on the inbound team busses, and then some of the thugs decided to kidnap star players.  The PCs were hired to scramble around the city recovering Urban Brawl stars.  Then -- if they did a good enough job to get enough "faces" on the field -- they receive a supplementary contract to be fillers, all covered up in helmets and armor and stuff, to play in the big game.
Ugh. Gross. I resent and am embarrassed by the time I spent thinking this site was okay.

Cricket.

Played against the Aztec gods of the dead for the souls of one of the PCs wife and children.

It was a weird game.

Emperor Norton

I've not done it, but I've always wanted to use Warhammer Fantasy to play a campaign in the blood bowl universe, where the characters are teammates on a team and have most of the game revolve around matches and all the crazy hijinks they get into between them.

TheShadow

I'd like to see hussade featured in a game someday.

RPGPundit

I've done this a few times: in my Legion game, for example, I remember having the PCs involved in Magno-ball (the Braalian sport) and Batball (the futuristic descendant of baseball).

In my Albion game, the PCs were involved in Manchester Shrovetide foot-ball, the ancestor to modern soccer/football, which was long illegalized for its tendency to wanton destruction and violence.
The Albion RPG book (soon to be published) will have details about that game.

And, of course, gladitorial fights.

Yep.  Since trolls in my world are pretty much RQ trolls, at least one party has seen a Trollball match.  Freaked the party pacifist out, too, especially when one enterprising troll spiked the "ball" ...
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

BrokenBall is a very popular game in much of the Cradle area of Celtricia.
Both the history and the rules have been worked through.  Somewaht similar to Soccer in that the offensive players can use only their feet and the defensive ones their hands and feet, it is very rough and tumble and played in lots every where.  The goal is small and tubular.

Even much of the social impact.  People who play a lot are called 'Clubbers', and in the collegium game, there are two levels of league, the Dorm league (playerd with the underclassmen of the Collegium Arcana) and the Fraternal League, where each large Order of magic, as well as 4 outside teams from other learning faction, compete.
Currently running 1 live groups and two online group in my 30+ year old campaign setting.

Many years back, classic LBB Traveller. My players got involved in a sabotage-turned-murder investigation/caper in the high-stakes sport of hydrofoil racing between the supporting pillars of arcologies on a water-world.

Yeah, that was a good one.

No Warhammer visit to Middenheim is complete without Snotball (soccer/rugby with a tied snotling as the ball) shenanigans.

My Shadowrun characters have gotten mixed up in gambling and cheating schemes with most of the major sports at one point or another, including trying to extract a star player from an Aztec Courtball team, and actually playing in an Urban Brawl match (think NFL, Running Man, and Rollerball...with machineguns).

A Soccer Hooligan brawl makes for a great police distraction....add in the whole boat of National, Racial, Corporate hatreds and you can keep the National Guard tied up too. :D

There's always Ye Olde Tourney that's pretty popular from competition to extra-curricular activities.

Have you ever played live Trollball? It was a blast for me.

Each player had their foam club. A solid hit knocked the limb out of commission until you reached the medic on the sidelines. The great trolls were half-backs, and if they hit you you had to touch belly or back to the ground before you could move on. They were so strong they knocked you down, you see.

The trollkin was the 2 ft long plush humanoid with detachable limbs and head. We had two, fortunately, and there's a lot of wear and tear on the trollkin in Trollball.

Nope.  The closest to live fantasy sport I ever did was when an eventholder in my fantasy boffer LARP decided to do a game vaguely reminiscent of soccer, with a "ball" about 7' wide (basically a giant polyhedron made of a lattice of PVC pipe).  Pushers manipulated it with poles to try to push it into a soccer net -- we played on the UMass soccer practice ground -- while a handful of warriors defended their pushers and attacked the other guys.  With the spear-like poles being unpadded and the "ball" itself a bit more fragile than was expected, the game broke a few of our safety rules and wasn't repeated ...

Daztur

In my Icelandic Sagas campaign the players played stick ball, which I interpreted as like field hockey with an pig bladder as a ball. Winged a lot of stuff with attack rolls for shots on goal and beating other player unconscious with the sticks. After getting the lead the players destroyed the ball "accidentally" to avoid the other team getting a chance to score and won a fighting horse.

soltakss

Out old RQ campaign had "Duck Golf", played by trolls and giants. Basically, you take a duck, a big club and try to hit the duck so that it flies into a pond.
