Do you use female goons?

Yes I do. About as often as it makes sense is a good answer.

Currently we play in historical France in 1624. So the majority of the sword swinging mooks are men since most soldiers and brigands were men. Some will be women. Same with the better than mook level sword swinging characters. On the other hand, the number of female priests so far is zero. As is the number of male nuns. At least as far as any of the PCs knows. ;)

In Gloranthan Runequest, probably 15% or more of Orlanthi militia level opponents would be female. 15% is the figure I recall from some description of the Orlanthi culture. The rate could be quite a bit higher in some Lunar units because Red Goddess and all that. Praxians probably have a higer than 15% rate in the major tribes. Minor tribes may skew up to 100% one way or the other.

In Star Wars a fair number of opponents are women. That is probably still a minority, except for Stormtroopers who are all male.

Pretty much this, not sure I have the same ratios of miniatures. I always figure in any sort of large group there is some level of female representation. It doesn't really get defined normally unless there is a greater reason. And hopefully it isn't some genocidal need to clear the dungeon of all orcs, etc. But the women will fight too so there is usually some level of representation.

Female NPCS? Sure, all the time.

Identifiably Female Monsters? Rarely.

Female mooks? Nope. Sausage fest all the way.

Probably because I've had several players become uncomfortable with any violence against female NPCs. Asexual goblins and orcs make the wanton slaughter easier.

and you don't have the NPC use that against them to get away or take advantage of the hesistation?  Shame on you!
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

That's basically how I do it too, only it's  closer to 50/50 with human/near-human. With other things, my players have never bothered to check while looting corpses.

As villains or types of monsters (like Medusas or Lamias or the like) sure.

As sword fodder or mooks? No, because it doesn't make sense. Any society that used women like that would not last another generation.

Yeah, no one at my table really cares, nor have we given it any thought.  The ratio is 2:1 only because I have twice as many male minis as female, so it just sort of ends up that way.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Yeah, really!

The truly advanced feminist, after internalizing equality and doing all they can for women's liberation, must eventually cross the threshold of final enlightenment and accept that in the end, just like men, women can be worthless assholes.

And then cleave through mix-gender goon squads with a glaive.

I absolutely take advantage of those players!!! But with named NPCs who eventually had to be put down. But something about killing female mooks did not sit well with the players.

I had a real problem years ago in a SpyCraft campaign hunting down an all-female terrorist organization operating in the Middle East. They wore burqas and blended in with the Muslim populace, using innocents as cover while killing any Muslim moderates. Popping those chicks in the head split the group badly.

After that session, I switched the group to killing pale asexual orcs.

If it's not written into a background/Scenario/setting, then generally I'll just grab whatever miniatures I have and use them.
some of them are female miniatures.

If I'm not using miniatures for some reason, or using such things as Dice etc to represent goons, then I'll randomly determine the sex at roughly a 50% ratio unless there's some compelling reason not to.

Ravenswing

Why wouldn't I?  I run my homebrew fantasy setting, and women are in every profession in proportionate numbers.

Yeah, no shit, historical settings are different: I sure didn't put Amazon regiments into the National Guard in Scarlet Pimpernel.  You'd think that'd go without saying.
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

Pretty much my experience.

I don't use "goons" or "mooks" or any of that Feng Shui 90s nonsense.

The concept offends me.

If players can easily dispatch multiple opponents, it should be because they're that badass, not because I'm artificially weakening the opponents for them.

That said, yeah, I use female antagonsists. Why wouldn't I?

BarefootGaijin

Never come up, never dwelt on it, never found the need to entertain the notion. Why? An arbitrary grouping of NPCs, cannon fodder, mooks or whatever based on either what is between their legs, or what they want to get their jollies with is of no consequence to me and seems irrelevant.

There are males and females in games. So what? Do you give a shit if someone has tits or a cock (or both?) if they are trying to kill you? Unless it is F.A.T.A.L. and they are trying to use said tits or cock to kill you, probably not.
I play these games to be entertained... I don't want to see games about rape, sodomy and drug addiction... I can get all that at home.

jibbajibba

Just realized how sexist I have been.
All of my mooks are males, except in female dominated groups. Gnolls, drow, spiders, etc.
There will always be female antagonists and npcs but they will be 'identified individuals' not mooks. The biker gang will all be male except for the cool one with the witty dialogue and the scatter gun. The pirates will all be male except for the twin two weapon fighting badasses, or maybe the captain.
So I realise that I am not only excluding women from the mook role. I am also making them on average far more competant than the men. Shame on me!
