This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Have you bought from the Banner Ads?

I use adblock but haven't felt the need to block the ads on this site because they're unobtrusive enough. I usually don't really pay attention to them, but I think I may have clicked once or twice to check something out. I've never bought anything.

The only RPG products I've ever bought as a result of banner ads have been on this site.
It makes a difference, at least to me, that I can usually trace the banner ad game back to a developer who frequents therpgsite.

I click them when they're even mildly interesting, and bought Adventure Awaits (IIRC) due to one.

I assume the advertisers pay, and therefore don't mind the clicks.

Quote from: RandallS;783862I bought a copy of Lowell was Right because of the banner ad here.

I must have missed those ads. Tell us about Lowell was Right!!

Quote from: Simlasa;783879I bought Lowell Was Right too.

You too! Who or what is Lowell?

GeekEclectic

Nope, never bought anything from the ads here. I've seen Arrows of Indra ads quite a bit, but I know it's written by Pundit, and he's kind of a hardcore grognard(he actually buys into that rpg/storygames false dichotomy BS), so I know his stuff wouldn't do anything for me.

I now see an ad for something that says "Versatile. Universal. Powerful." Um, I already have GURPS, Fate Core, Savage Worlds, BRP, Hero, and probably a few other things. Maybe an ad that doesn't fail to say what's so compelling about its product while making it sound like a dozen other products that I already have would be better? It's just a thought.

And that's the only ad I remember, and the only ad I see right now. Is it any wonder that I don't buy?

Percival Lowell... a Victorian era mathematician/astronomer who represents an earlier strata of scientific theory... which, while now mostly defunct, portrayed an intriguing set of principles for how the universe works.
Lowell started speculations about 'canals' on Mars.

A paraphrase of the bit I wrote on DTRPG:
The setting for Lowell Was Right is based on a universe where the obsolete science of the Victorian era was right... and all the BIZARRE implications that follow from it.
LWR is NOT Steampunk... it's based on science rather than SCIENCE! The setting extrapolates from acceptance of 1880's scientific assumptions, but takes part in our present day. So much is different though that it's pretty much another world.
No electronics but spaceflight is common (with lots of alien life forms on other planets)... evolution can happen in a flash, as can geological changes.
A particular favorite of mine is the scientific vindication of some of the claims of Spiritualism... and the idea of creating ghosts of living beings, on purpose, for various mundane purposes. It's a pretty wild idea in a book full of wild ideas... that aren't all THAT wild since they are based on a real world science that once was current/modern/up to date.

It's all a bit to wrap your head around... it's not a setting I think could just be jumped into... similar to brain-twisty stuff like Eclipse Phase this game was a bit of a mindwarp as I first read it... but it's a fun one, and not depressing/scary/uncomfortable the way Eclipse Phase felt at first.
Definitely recommended for at least a read through and mine for ideas.

Huh! Glad I read this thread! I have assumed all along that the vast majority of people here are blocking the ads, and that those who don't are ignoring them. I buy the ads to support the RPG Site more than anything - actually selling games doesn't even enter into the equation. I'm not sure that this thread actually debunks that theory, but if two people actually bought Lowell through clicking the ads, that shocks me. Lowell is probably the strangest RPG I have written, and that's coming from the guy who wrote a baseball RPG.

Thank you!

I would argue that The Tools Of Ignorance is the strangest rpg you have written.  Lowell Was Right seems weird until you wrap your brain around it -- then it is a standard rpg with a strange science backing it up.

Playing a baseball season thru an rpg is still strange even after doing it once.

I don't click on banner ads --and on most places I go to I've got ABP on so I don't see them-- but I'll also admit that the ads on theRPGSite are very mellow compared to most of the ads out there.

Not sure why they show up here with ABP on, but really, I don't mind given how innocuous they are.

But on most other sites I can't stand the ads, and the clickbait ones had a longstanding reputation for inserting malware on your computers. In 1995, when the web was young and I was stupid, I clicked on one of those and immediately infected my computer. Haven't done it since.

No thanks.

I read the new ones when they come up and have bought several.

Zwei, there's an Advertise with Us link under the ad at the top.  I linked to it here in case your browser isn't showing it.

My guess is they aren't blocked because theRPGSite hosts the banners themselves and isn't part of a big ad network with separate servers in a blacklist.

As many have said, if all ads were like these, there wouldn't be much need for adblock.

I've bought some advertised products, but not sure it was because of the ad.  Its that whole marketing premise that on average someone has to see something 7 times before they buy.

We'll be advertising again as soon as I can revise one of our ads.
