This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Did I overlook something or is charging no longer a thing? Couldn't find any reference to it in the Basic Rules, but am considering giving advantage to a character who moves his/her full speed in a straight line before attacking with a melee weapon. Thoughts?

Charging shouldn't give you a bonus to hit. The bonus should be on damage and the defender should get advantage to strike you if you miss.

So either the traditional double damage, or +1d6 damage or advantage on damage.
Defender gets advantage on their roll to hit you.

You could look at reach as a modifer for initiative here.

I'm also curious to see if Combat Options are in the PHB, specifically Disarm and Trip.

From what I've read Charge was removed to avoid all those cheesy charge builds in 4e and it's not particularly needed anyway given the fact you can move and attack in whatever combination and probably just Dash and attack possibly.

Well, one of the most traditional charge rules is a bonus to hit — +2 in 1E.

This is what I was thinking.

Although I agree that realistically, charging probably doesn't make it easier to hit, and that the bonus should be for damage.

Guess I'll play by the RAW and wait for the DMG.

Yes, charging as a general thing has been removed.

There is a 'Charger' feat in the PHB, but I haven't seen that anywhere yet.

All the CHARGE! PCs were eliminated by natural selection?
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

By Basic's current .pdf each gets 1 Action, movement up to one's Speed, and 1 Reaction. Bonus Actions are granted by other effects; they exist, but are not native.

Dash takes your action. "When you take the Dash action..." (D&D 5e Basic .pdf, as of July 2014, pg. 72., col. 1.)

So, no. No attack at the end, per RAW.

However, Rogue's 2nd lvl Cunning Action grants Dash as a Bonus Action during combat (Disengage and Hide are also options). So they can move their speed, dash an additional of their speed, and use their Action to attack.

Also, a Fighter's 2nd lvl Action Surge grants a one-time additional Action, period (recharges with Short Rest). So they can also move, Dash, and attack. But Action Surge is also crazy flexible, and currently not limited to combat, as per lack of "in combat" wording present in Cunning Action.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Trip is in the Basic .pdf as an option under shove.

Hmmm...a pre-gunpowder combat game that doesn't include charging? I'm not feeling them on that one.

You can attack and move up to your movement in any order though. Dash is a seperate thing. And yes there is a reason why all sorts of people are trying to figure out if taking 2 levels of fighter for Second Wind and Action Surge the new thing. Also Cunning Action is deadly.

There's no marking in the game so without it charging with bonuses in combination with action surge, cunning action, maneuvers equals game broken and over.

I don't know if Charge will be a rule, but I really hate charge rules that give a bonus to hit.

Anyway, I can see in 5E giving a person set vs a charge advantage, and the person charging gets dissadvantage to hit, but if they do hit, double damage.
Maybe alter that based on the types of weapons wielded.
The main problem with charge attacks in my opinion, is they really are about morale, not hitting and damage.
