This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How many of us are wargamers?

Just what it says on the tin.

"Wargamer" for the sake of discussion is anything from Diplomacy to Risk to Stratego to Avalon Hill to SPI to any of a myriad of miniatures wargames.

By "Wargamer" let's assume I mean "played more than once or twice and like them," just for the sake of discussion.

I have some hypotheses about "unstated expectations," you see.

(No, I don't thing wargamers are more "macho."  A bunch of pudgy guys pushing little tanks around a ping pong table is about as far from "macho" as you can get and still have Y chromosomes involved.)

Mechanics should reflect flavor. Always.
Running: Chrono Break: Dragon Heist + Curse of the Crimson Throne (D&D 5e).
Planning: Rappan Athuk (D&D 5e).

I am to a limited degree. My main problem that nowadays I'm a cheap bastard. So I cook up my own rule sets. Ive been working on a project for well over a year now. Similar to the AK47, Modern Havok: Bongolesia. I'm developing my own imagination african hell hole pitting scrappy corrupt rebels vs a completely corrupt government force.

Hmm I've never thought of modern miniatures games as wargames. I speak of Warhammer Fantasy/40K, Warmachine and Hordes, Malifaux, or Infinity. Saga, which is historical is more of a minis game and not a Wargame.

If you were asking if I was a Minis gamer, then yes, I could answer that as definitely. I play a wide variety of minis games and have far more minis than I really should... Most of which are unassembled, and few if even painted...

How can it not be a wargame?  Is it two or more bunches of people shooting/stabbing/swording at each other?  Sounds like a wargame to me.

"Wargame" is a game about war.  If "In the dark future of Warhammer 40K there is only war," or whatever the slogan is, how is that not a wargame?

I don't know... For me wargames are ASL, Fortress Europa, mass scale Nepoleonics, Car Wars, Ogre, Star Fleet Battles; even Battletech skirts the line between wargame and modern minis game. I think its just a perception I've held since I first got into gaming 30 years ago...

Modern minis games just don't seem to have the level of detail I would expect from an actual wargame...

Huh, only minis I had were martian metals for snapshot. Owned Imperium before Traveller, first chess lessons around 8-9, played first "wargame" was probably Afrika Korps or The Russian Campaign (still own 'em); my Father was mil intel, he thought I should get ready, and by God, as a cold warrior I was always ready to lead a armored assault. The games were more fun than being an errand boy sent by grocery clerks though, Ogre never left me with a limp and years of physical therapy.

My first ship had a Star Fleet Battles roster and we regularly challenged each other. Best games were when we were in port and we could use the Combat Information Center to lay down the maps.

They were calling minis games "wargames" over a century ago.  What in your mind disqualifies them from that name?
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

I said that I wasn't but 15 years ago I played Warhammer and Necromunda and Mordheim. Haven't actually played in about 12 years.

Well, with a cursory glance at it, this fits more to my idea of a wargame than a modern minis game (i.e. 40k, WarmaHordes, Infinity).

Fantasy (Tractics D&D mashup? Fuck yes!), historical (Alexander the Great right now), minis on a sand table, chits, just bring it.

We played stuff with rocco, like SL; big hobby store near me had one giant room for trains (HO here), one for slot cars (I forget how many I had), and one for a huge WW2 terrain setup. This is mid-70's as well, by the late 70's-early 80's you had a ton of different minis, like micro-armor and space armada(?). I remember playing Jutland with minis, pretty cool.

Grey Wanderer

I used to play tons of minis games. All the GW stuff, WRG, DBA/DBM, HOTT, and weird random fantasy minis games we'd try out once in a while.

Less familiar with hex and counter wargames, though I did play a lot of Elric and Dragon Pass at one point.

I'd love to play more, but just don't have the time, or ability to get opponents together regularly.
