This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

OK. Not really liking that. I was hoping there were some cool "titles" in chinese myth about witch hunters.

Im no expert, other than wikipedia (which of course is always accurate), but i'm not sure that's what witch translates as. In fact i'm not sure what witches are culturally in china. Demons? Practitioners of Taoist sorcery and Chinese Black Magic?

And I suppose as your lawyer you expect me to believe in these things too?

How can I know that Mr Shen?

In the Mr. Vampire films, a Taoist priest deals with the hopping vampires and ghosts. I don't think it's a stretch that they'd also deal with witches.

My post was referring to the fact that it was largely the rise of Confucianism which marked the death-knell of the Wu tradition as a really powerful force in China (though the rise of intellectual Taoism, which kind of grew out of the Wu tradition, played its part too).

Cool. I didn't know that Taoism took over from Wu, though I probably should have guessed. Maybe that's why Taoist monks are often featured as ghost-killers in the various Hong Kong movies.

From my nascent Chinese

Nǚwū lièrén

Nǚ = female
wū  = witch and a load of other shit from dirt to tungsten but if you use this character 巫 it means witch, shaman, priest - the character is from people working ..... weirdly :)

lièrén
liè = Hunting if you use 猎  - other characters have multiple meanings from raw to :rolleyes: (yes really :) 睙 )
rén = person

So literally "person hunting female shaman"

Seems close enough.

Yes. In the early (pre-unification) period, the Wu had a huge societal role; this was gradually eroded as these people who were fairly powerful and independent "witch doctors" started being replaced with the more philosophical (but equally esoteric) Taoists; then the Confucians came along and created a more orderly society.  Between the Taoists and the Confucians, they co-opted a lot of what the Wu used to do; until finally the Wu were reduced to exorcists and petty magicians who were at times harassed by the authorities as troublemakers and frauds.  There's more details to the whole thing than that, but basically it was a case of folk religion being eclipsed by the more sophisticated forms of religion of increasingly civilized society.
