This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: greylond;522253No, they want to do a game that gives a similar feel to the games that they played from the late '70's through the late '90s but they can't do without a license to use D&D game mechanics.

While that may be true, but I also think they had a pretty nifty RPG in the form of Ace & Eights and they went "Hey! This will work for fantasy too with some work." I think that dominated the decision to make Hackmaster 5e the way it is.

Nope, the other way around. The mechanics that are found in A&8's that are similar to what is in the new HM they were purposely trying out with the intention all along to put in HM. Dave Kenzer refers to A&8's as "HM4.5" all the time.

And yea, they want a game that is totally their creation so that they have complete control over it. Their experiences with WOTC kinda locked that one in...

Quote from: RPGPundit;522233Except that Kenzer has pretty much demonstrated that they don't actually want to do D&D.  They want to do some point-buy game.

RPGPundit

Meh, it's fine with me.  They should do their own thing.  The Dnd niche is pretty full currently. It doesn't mean I'll convert to it beyond getting the PHB and HoB. Don't prefer point buy usually but I'll keep an open mind.
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

I don't object to Kenzer doing their own thing if that's what they want to do. Except inasmuch that I think that would actually make them very bad stewards of the real D&D.
