This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I don't think "hoax" is too strong a word for describing Encounter Critical.  Not given that it was originally presented as a "little known RPG" published in 1981 or something like that, and utterly seriously presented as though it was a rare find of truly garage-publishing old-school, and only LATER did the authors reveal that the whole thing had been fabricated as a clever trick.

I'd say that's the very technical definition of "hoax".

OK I got out my old orange folder and went through it.

There is a complete module I wrote, I think from 1982 or 1983.  It's hand written, and then most of it is also typed.  I have the full hand written version, and then 11 of the 13 rooms are typed as well.  Not sure if the last couple pages are lost, or if they never got typed up.  The map is hand drawn on graph paper.

I also have several other hand drawn maps, some out doors and some dungeons, and four character write-ups.  I don't have any recollection at all of the character write-ups.  It's theoretically possible those are someone else's work from a convention or something, though the paper looks identical to the module paper which I know was my work.  So, could be my work as well.

I'll see if I can get them scanned soon.  Looks at least worth posting to that website.  Sadly, no cool monster drawings, though there is one new hand written monster write-up.

It helps if you keep in mind that part of the RPGPundit persona is an extreme paranoia that somebody, somewhere is trying to pull one over on him.

Quote from: km10ftp;509325Hi,

Someone just linked this over on Mythmere's Swords & Wizardry boards. I just thought that I would post it here too in case someone else hasn't already.

There is a link here to a shared pdf of the module (uploaded with author's permission as I understand it).

Hi! I'm the guy hosting the PDF. Could the original poster please revise the link so it posts to my blog post rather than directly to the file?  Here's the blog post where the file is posted:

"By the Book" or "BtB" merely means that the game is being played within close physical proximity to one or more of the books containing the material which explains how to play the game. If the book is not within close proximity, one is playing "away from the book" or "across from the book" or "someplace where the book is not located".

Done and done and happy to. Thanks for making this available by the way. I was planning to leave you an 'awesome' over on the S&W boards, in fact, I will go and do it now. :D

Best of luck with the blog, I've added it to my bookmarks list. Sorry, it was a little thoughtless of me to link directly to the file. Credit where credit is due after all.

This is very cool. Someone had placed an ad for Plagmada soliciting old dungeons on the board at the flgs. I wondered what that was all about, and how things would be archived.

It's a cool idea. I have mountains of old PeeChee folders full of all kinds of wierd stuff from the 70s and 80s. I don't know how you'd go about recovering them, but I bet I have a bunch of five and a quarter floppies from the eighties with a mighty awesome Black Phraint incursion campaign. I wonder if I could find a working Commodore 64.

Maybe I'll have time this summer to go through that stuff for something worth archiving.

No, actually, I didn't mean it to be in a disparaging sense. I thought it was really an extremely clever trick on their part.  I had a bit of suspicion when it was first "discovered" in that it seemed just a little too perfect, touching just a little bit on all of the tropes one would want in that kind of a game, though I can't honestly go so far as to say that I "knew" it was a trick or something.  So I give EC kudos for its genius.  But I don't understand how one could say it wasn't a hoax?

It was a great sort of hoax really, one where the architect of the hoax admitted it.

I finally got around to scanning the module I mention above.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7DNjAmimrzuZTIxYzRkMjgtYmYzMi00MzYyLTg5NmEtYzZlYjViODExZWFm

It's an AD&D module I wrote in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Half typed, and half hand-written (apparently I never finished typing it up, though I have the full hand-written version).  It includes a hand-drawn map at the end. It appears incomplete, as a few of the last rooms are missing descriptions. But for the most part, it looks playable (though is probably awful, as I'd have been age 10 to 13).

There are several more maps in the folder I found them in, along with at least one new monster write-up, and I think some Marvel superheros stuff.  I'll probably scan some of those in another time.

This is awesome! Can I add it to my archive on Dropbox? I'll post a link to your Google Docs version, too, and link back to this forum in a post on the blog.
