This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Word. Tell it though to the crew that cries that Warhammer is, and I quote

QuoteI mean, seriously, random rolled stats in a game which isn't supposed to be a bleak comedy about lack of control in an unfair world?

No, but Paranoia and WFRP are, and those are the only competently designed games I've ever seen with that feature (the current edition of D&D doesn't have it).

I left out the part when I lash out for being so daft as to say that random rolled stats is a bad design belonging to the 80's rpgs.

Where's that conversation happening?

Wasn't much of a conversation. I'm putting the link to the thread, but it ain't exactly a load of fireworks.

I swear, when someone calls Warhammer a "bleak comedy", my slapping hand tightens instinctively.

B.T.

Quote from: Benoist;500089If you don't see how important the nuance is, I'm sorry, but I can't help you.
The two are so intertwined that I feel differentiating them is pointless hair-splitting.

With regard to rolling stats, I don't get the hate for it.  When I was younger and much more of a 3e character optimizer sperg, I was far more concerned about point buy and "fair" characters.  While I prefer point buy for 3e games because of the way that 3e's math works (stupidly), I am growing fonder of rolling for stats as time passes.  It seems to create more interesting characters, ones that grow organically as opposed to rigidly-defined characters with predetermined backstories.
Quote from: Black Vulmea;530561Y\'know, I\'ve learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that\'s something, I guess.

I agree that 'bleak comedy' is a misnomer, but farce is, i believe, an important component.

Black humour rather then farce, I'd say. And even then, in a very careful moderation. It's only 2e that pretty much added too much of that black humour.

I'm not a big fan of PCs sliding on horse poo every single time they fail a check.

All you have to do is look at Rough Night at the Three Feathers to see that farce is a well established trope in WFRP. Black humour, sure, but farce all the way for me.

I can agree on Rough Night, as it is a gem of an adventure.

Shadows over Bogenhafen though? That's classic Hitchcock practically. Ordinary people in the wrong place at a wrong time, facing challenges well beyond their station.

I think that might qualify as farce.

Regardless as to whether we agree, it's something i tried to inject into my chapter of The Thousand Thrones (although some might say that the whole chapter was a farce! ;)).

Don't get me wrong, as I said - some black humour is needed so that the game does not go into GRIMDARK. I just prefer to run/believe that was the intent my Warhammer games as closer to Hitchcock ideals - intense plots, that are often way over the heads of people who discover  them, and they will crush them, if they do not flee or fight them, usually both.

Farce for me is too much about people slipping on banana peels and Sigmarite Priests carrying brazers on their heads. Never read Thousand Thrones - 2e never appealed that much to me, and I tried.

Ha! Well, that is certainly in the 'where are my trousers' part of farce, but it can be a bit more subtle than that.

Of course, but that is why I am rather hesitant to use term like farce to describe Warhammer - since due to misconceptions about success chances for player characters, people usually get the "so I have 30% that I won't slip on  the mud as I fight in combat?" perception.

And come on. Luther Huss, REALLY? ;)

Sure, i wouldn't use it to describe WFRP, but i would use it to describe an important component part.

In the WFRP lexicon, that doesn't even qualify!

That I can agree with, though I think that 2e really went veeeery much too far on that.

I am scared to ask what other puns there are, and what punsmith you hired to make them. Though Luther Huss was actually a decent one, if only he was actually a bit of Luther or a bit of Huss :/.
