This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Cloak & Dagger, the RPG

Okay.

I can't be the only person in the world who's actually seen (and indeed held!) a copy of the pen-and-paper boardgame/RPG hybrid from the 1983(?) movie of the same name.  Used an actual board for some elements (hey, gotta get that Jack Flack miniature in there!), and 20-sided percentile dice.  Anyone else seen one?  Own one?

Here is the item in question.  More boardgame than RPG ("...twisted and evil.")

Damn, thought this was about the obscure comic book duo from Spider-man.

Obscure hell; I had every issue of that one.

..Obscure?? Really??

Why yes I own some of the early C&D comics

As for the game, I remember that movie, but am amused there was a boardgame/demi RPG for it. Never new it existed until now.

Maybe they aren't as obscure as I thought, at least among comicbook readers themselves. Unfortunately, I don't get to hang out with any other comicbook fans my age much these days. Trying to talk about comics with a kid who started reading them in the 90s is...frustrating.

Adapt

I had this game and played the hell out of it when I was a kid. It helped that I also loved the movie. "Jack Flack always escapes!"

EDIT: Holy smokes, I forgot that it came with a d12, of all the dies. Another win.

Actually they just ran their own mini series in 2010 and there are even rumblings about a movie  so ....

I know they showed up in Runaways a few years ago, so they were still on the radar, but then even Runaways I would've consider a bit of an "obscure" comic, at least in regards to non-regular comic book readers.

I'm not holding my breath for a film, but it would be quite awesome. Loved their powers, and the focus the original series had on disenfranchised inner-city youth. And Mr. Jip. He deserves to make it to the big screen.

Anyways, so as not to totally derail the thread....what was this film about? Worth renting?

Just in general looking the game over, it kind of makes me feel like there should have been a similar boardgame-rpg for the 80s film Skullduggery....

The movie is pretty typical 80s fare in the WarGames vein.  A young boy winds up in possession of an Atari cartridge that is supposed to be the latest hot game but as it turns out embedded on the cart are classified documents.  Bad guys chasing the kid ensues.

The main character (played by then hot property Henry Thomas) has a rich inner fantasy life centered around video games and RPGs*, his favorite being - yep, you guessed it - cloak and dagger.  His dad (who dual-roles as master spy Jack Flack and the dad, played by Dabney Coleman) is an Air Force officer and largely absent from his son's life.  The boy's imaginary friend is RPG and video game hero Jack Flack which the son envisions as an action version of his own father.  "Jack" guides the kid as he flees villainous spies, but "his" advice grows increasingly dangerous and (for the bad guys) lethal culminating in a fatal ambush for a couple of bad guys that leaves the boy shocked.  He angrily banishes Jack and escapes using "his own" wits, finally reuniting with his dad (who has dropped everything to try and rescue his son).

Lots of fiddly bits in that set; I wonder if it was complete.

I actually have the original board game, I got it when I was young. I loved the movie, and like Henry Thomas, I used to carry Jack Flack with me in my pocket.

Raven

I love the movie. I didn't know there was a board game though.

The Cloak & Dagger videogame game in the movie was real, as well. There was an arcade version and one released for the Atari 5200.
