This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I amused myself with the solo game books back when they came out. (I always love those things.)

I've yet to pick up the game, I am planning on it though. Right now I still have to finish up my Lone Wolf collection.
High Valor REVISED: A fantasy Dark Age RPG. Available NOW!

High Fantasy (as in magic is everywhere and very common), class-based, 2D6 + rank in one of eight attributes, try to exceed target number.  Skills and powers (similar to 3E "feats") give a bonus or otherwise help in certain circumstances.  Random roll or choose things like age, height, background, country of origin, etc, some of these have a small effect on your abilities.  Though other races are present in the setting, all PCs are human.  It's a decent, light system, I think it will mainly appeal to fans of the gamebooks, though it is a good intro system or good for people looking for a rules-light fantasy experience.  Like Dragon Warriors or Fighting Fantasy, it is tied pretty closely to its setting (Harkuna), though I don't think it would be difficult to genericize it.

Pretty good review here:

6 book choose your own path adventure game books, but with the added feature of replay value. I.e. you get to revisit the same locations and same paragraph numbers. Each paragraph number has various conditions associated with it enabling you to experience something new at the "site".

Also all 6 books are interlinked, meaning at certain places in say book 1, it gives you the opportunity to visit book 2 etc...

Imagine Steve Jackson's (the UK version) Sorcery epic, and you are not that far away.
"See you on the Other Side"

Playing: Nothing
Running: Nothing
Planning: pathfinder amongst other things

Playing every Sunday in Bexleyheath, Kent, UK 6pm til late...

I think he's refering to the new RPG based on the books, not the books themselves.

From what I've seen and heard about the RPG, it looks interesting.  I don't know anything about the Fabled Lands book series though, but I've heard it was pretty cool.  The only thing I'm not thrilled about is the world being too detailed ( I'd rather make my own shit up ) and a bit too 'high magic' for my tastes.

For those who actually read/played the original book series, how did the rules play out?  Were they balanced?  Did they break down at higher levels?  Are characters too powerfull?  Too weak?
There\'s a fine line between \'clever\' and \'stupid\'.

I stand corrected.
I only had the first book, given to me, and discovered the 2nd and 3rd books in a remainder book store.

The 4,5 and 6th parts are way too expensive on eBay. Never played it much, as it was released at the dying end of the CYOA era.

The first four books have been republished (in a somewhat smaller format) and should be on sale through Amazon and probably other online booksellers.  The rest of the series (including the previously unpublished books 7-12) may be reprinted as well if sales are high enough on the first four books.

This thread is the first time that I have heard of it.

Yes, I was referring to the new RPG; though I'm not familiar with the gamebooks they're based on either.  I never saw them when they came out, perhaps they weren't around in Canada...

I'd call it good business sense myself, but to-may-to, to-mah-to...
