This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The actual content in your post was pretty bare, but more importantly it wasn't actually a rebuttal to the "Why RPGs Suck" article. A rebuttal involves interacting with the points that the article you're rebutting actually brought up -- showing why they are not true, or why they are not relevant. After that has been done, then adding an additional point or two as to why you believe your side of the argument is even stronger might be alright(it really depends on the format of the debate as to when and to what extent bring in new material is acceptable).

"I see your reasons, and instead of addressing them I'll just give you my three unrelated reasons as to the contrary" is not a rebuttal. It just isn't.

Pedantics at it's finest. It's his version of a rebuttal, not some wanna-be college professors.

It's hardly pedantic to expect a rebuttal to actually rebut something. Words mean something. "His version" indeed.

*edit* Removed that it was a rebuttal when it really wasnt

Why not?

Didn't see the OP's Blog, don't care. I didn't read the entire original "Why RPGs Suck" article(don't care about that either). However, here is why I think RPGs "Don't Suck."

I've been playing some kind of "Role Playing Game" since the late 70s. Almost all of my friends I have made over the years have been gamers, almost all of them met through RPGs, a few during Wargames/Boardgames. I even met my Wife because of a "AD&D Players Wanted" Advert in a Game Store 20 years ago. Most of my time off from work revolves around gaming (gamedays/Conventions). Gaming(especially RPGs) has provided me with a life long hobby in which I get to meet and interact with people from ALL walks of life(career, social and economic backgrounds) that I wouldn't have interacted with for any other reason. I even got a job one time(and switched from being a Electronics Tech to a Computer Support Tech) because of one of my friends met through RPGs. For me, gaming is a very social event and I love it.

As far as cost? I can spend $20 to $100 on an RPG that I get countless hours of enjoyment out of. There is simply NO Other Hobby/Entertainment Outlet that I'm interested in that gets me the number of hours of enjoyment per dollar spent. NOTHING even comes close.

Now, some RPGs suck(for me and my friends) but guess what?, most RPGs produced have some kind of Fan Base. That means that there are people out there using RPGs to have an enjoyable time with some friends. Even for those games out there that I firmly believe Suck, BIG TIME, I'm sure that there is a group or three out there that is having fun. So, some game designer out there created a game and a bunch of people out there play it and have fun. Maybe 99% of the RPG industry/community out there thinks that game sucks but for me if there are people out there using it to have fun, then that's cool.

There definitely ARE RPGs out there that from a Business perspective have sucked. In other words, the company that produced it not only didn't make a profit, said company went out of business after producing said RPG. In that case I'd argue that the Company was the one that Sucked for such a bad marketing/business strategy.

For me, RPGs are tool for a Hobby. The purpose of an RPG is to provide a game that some friends can have fun with. As long as that purpose is being fulfilled, then NO, it doesn't Suck. Pointing out one or two games that may Suck because they are so bad that No One Who Is Sane can have fun with it (and therefore can be said to be 'Not Fun') doesn't mean that "RPGs Suck."

If someone from a game design background says that, the first thing that I would think is, "Maybe It's just YOU."

Some people apparently are much better at posting blogs, but go nuts when simply posting in forums.

That may be true for some people, however for me it is much more simple.  I want to spend less time on forums and just being on the net in general.

So I can post a topic in one place and if people want to reply then that's fine.

I have too many projects to work on and I want to minimize my unproductive time online (such as browsing forums, etc).

I will still will go on forums, just a lot less

I guess The Pundit is the exception to the rules.  He goes nuts on his blog and in the forum.
