This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Can the FLGS be saved?

Quote from: ggroy;362211I have an HD screen and audio system for it. Though I hardly ever use it.  Only really used it for watching movies.

Otherwise most of the time I end up watching some old 15 year old hunk of junk TV, mostly crappy tv shows and cnn.  CNN looks just as awful in HD.

EDIT:  Most other tv shows I watch look just as crappy in HD, like the CSI and Law & Order franchises in reruns.  Perhaps Star Trek may look better in HD, but I haven't seen any Star Trek stuff yet in HD.

I don't watch any regular TV at all. I don't even have cable. The only recent TV shows I've seen are Dr Who, which I rented from netflix, and Primeval, which I streamed from netflix. My TV can go months without being turned on.

There's still a few HMV stores around in the British Isles and Canada.

This would be the ultimate "wet dream" of a totalitarian regime.  History can be rewritten to their own agenda, without well documented sources.

That's a good point. I think though, that electronic media has kind of made that level of control almost superfluous. There is so much information from so many sources that even when the horrible truth gets out, it can be drowned out by the cries of Tiger Wood's 10,000 scorned mistresses.

I may very well get rid of the cable in the near future.  Other than watching CNN, most of the other stuff I watch are reruns which I've seen many times already.

I remember back in the 1980's, the equivalent "complaint" was that kids/teens/young adults were watching too much MTV and crap TV like Geraldo, instead of the news or the newspaper.

Nowadays, kids/teens don't watch MTV at all and "trash TV" has moved online to places like youtube.

EDIT:  These days anyone can be their own "pundit" on their own blogs and message boards.

Me too, BTW. I have no crystal ball here at home, so I can't know for sure what the future of the FLGS is made of, either. Just for the record.

These articles about Hollywood vs. Blockbuster are really interesting. Thanks for the links, ggroy!

Quote from: ggroy;362192No more Blockbusters nearby.  Can't think of any offhand which are still around in other parts of town.

What about RedBox or something similar?

I've seen self-serve kiosks (whether redbox or not) at various grocery stores and convenience stores nearby.  Though I've never use them.

We've got those, but they have an extremely limited selection. I think they appeal to the same demographic as movie theatres really (16-24 yr olds).

They are, but they're the new Blockbuster. Those types of stores didn't disappear (in fact, there are 11 near where I used to live and work), but did evolve.

Just wanted to mention that two new flgs have opened in Colorado Springs since the last post here:

A new expansion for Compleat Games and Hobbies
7862 N Academy Blvd
Colorado Springs, CO 80920

And Petries Family Games
3502 Hartsel Drive, Suite 100
Colorado Springs, CO, 80920

Both stores have ample tables and space to play. They are both in close proximity to the corner I already described with three of four points containing game stores. And they are both looking for gms to host D&D Encounters, if that's your thing.

I don't know what it is around here. I wish we could airlift a few of these shops out to some of you folks without them. We have too many. I wonder if we aren't fragmenting our scene.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

I'm curious, if fuel prices were to go through the roof, if this might cause a resurgence of local game stores.

At $5.00 or $6.00/gallon, I'd imagine people would drive significantly less, and I'd imagine that USPS/UPS/FedEx prices would get more expensive.  Perhaps we'd see the end of Amazon's free shipping?

I wonder if that would be enough to make it economical to open/re-open local stores in some of the smaller areas.

What's interesting here is the Colorado Springs angle.  No offense intended, but having lived in Colorado for about 5 years, but having come from the Metropolitan East Coast, I felt like Stranger in a Strange Land out there.  I'm about to broadly stereotype the area:

1.  Heavy Military presence. (Air Force Academy, as well as military bases.)
2.  Heavy Religious/Focus on the Family/Promise Keepers type presence.

It's Like George W. Bush/Sarah Palin land.  It's a heavy values-laden area.

Some part of me feels that there are so many stores in Springs because of those 2 factors above, but I am at a loss as to describe why that is.  Something to do with traditional family values, of sitting around a table playing games together, as well as the geek mystique taken away from wargaming because of the military culture.

I'd be interested in what the guys who live there feel about this.

Again, no offense intended.

As for there being so many in Denver, for those who haven't been there, Denver is a lot like Boston, in that most of the city is in outlying areas, as opposed to bing in the downtown urban city setting.  It's sprawling suburbia-land.  To actually get into the city itself is a bitch and a half. (Did they ever finish the T-REX mess guys?)  That may be why there are so many stores, mostly in outlying areas. Each outlying area is like an independent region unto itself, due to the sprawling nature of it.

I'm surprised there aren't many gaming stores in the Republic of Boulder.  :)
