This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Seanchai;341105Or do you mean comments about her on message boards? If it's this, well, then she needs to cowboy up. It's time for her to be a Big Girl. She's the owner of a business now. She is, at least in our little niche, a public figure. People are going to say things.
Yeah, Gail Gygax should wade into the boardsphere to deal with the Seanchais of cyberspace.

A wiser and more profitable business strategy would be to stick a fork in her own eye and declare D&D Satan's own hobby on national television.

She'd have absolutely no trouble with the Seanchai's of cyberspace as we don't give a damn about Gygax's legacy or what's done with it. As far as I'm concerned, she can take decades to produce whatever product she'd like.

But I'm not suggesting she should have a presence on the Internet or deal personally with customers on the Web. I am suggesting that, as a business owner and someone stepping into shoes of a gaming icon, that she needs to get used to the idea that a) people won't always be happy with her or her plans and b) they're going to be vocal about their unhappiness.

Good post, but let's not confuse JRT's white-knighting with Gail Gygax actually being bothered by nerdrage on the internet.
Don\'t forget rule no. 2, noobs. Seriously, just don\'t post there. Those guys are nuts.

Speak your mind here without fear! They\'ll just lock the thread anyway.

Seanchai's of CyberSpace sounds like a title for a cool Studio Ghibli flick.

Except even the Japanese know how apostrophes work.  Or should that be "apostrophe's"?

Actually, that'd probably be one of the best things that could possibly happen as far as popularizing the hobby again.

I've said it a million times: when we were "dangerous", instead of "lame", when mothers were worried that their little boys playing D&D would make them murder people in steam tunnels rather than mothers worrying their little boys playing D&D means they'll be virgins at 40 who never move out of the basement, we were far, far better off.

And that would be different from reality how?

a) "We're better off if RPGs are seen as dangerous."
b) "Introducing sex into RPGs is dangerous!"

Obviously you're trying to encourage people to see RPGs as dangerous by criticizing a small segment of the hobby. Damned smart, given the premise.

... OK, probably not really the case, but it'd be brilliant of you if it were so!

I think you've missed the mark here. Introducing sex into RPGs is dangerous for US, it doesn't make us "look" dangerous. It makes us look like a bunch of perverts and degenerates in the same way that Furries look like a bunch of perverts and degenerates.

The dangerous I want RPGs to seem like is... like... heavy metal, violence, satanism, the occult. The Occult!! Anytime you can get people seriously freaked out that "The Children" are being indoctrinated into "the Occult" by something, it triples its sales.

The forge games, and their invitation of sexual deviants into our hobby, on the other hand, will in no way make us "cool". It'll make us even worse-looked-upon than now. It'll shift the current public perception of gamers as "pathetic nerdy adult-virgins" to "CREEPY pathetic nerdy perverts who probably shouldn't be allowed to be alone with children".

It would take our situation from "bad" to "unsalvageable". Like the furries.  There is absolutely NOTHING that could be done now that would save furry fandom. If it were just that they were seen as dorky, they could be redeemed and their movement become more popular. But add the perverted-sex into the equation, and you have a group that will Never, Ever overcome that branding to once more look respectable.

QuoteThe dangerous I want RPGs to seem like is... like... heavy metal, violence, satanism, the occult. The Occult!! Anytime you can get people seriously freaked out that "The Children" are being indoctrinated into "the Occult" by something, it triples its sales.

The so-called "occult" isn't as much as scary now as it was back in the 70s/80s.  Heavy Metal is now, in a way, oldies music.

The problem is RPGs, thanks to computer games, are mainstream and we have a whole generation who grew up with them.  For some reason tabletop games remained "nerdy", while computers are seen as more mainstream.

But if you notice something about moral panic is that it only affects something that is both new and popular and a bit strange.  D&D was that way in the late 70s.  But now it's been around for 30+ years.  The last time I saw was the rise of Vampire and LARPGs.  People will be more worried about kids and what new things influence them.  There's no real way for these games to really push the envelope anymore than what has already happened.

I don't think moral panic really helped D&D at all--all it did was extend the faddish attention for a few more years.  You have to become a fad before the critics will rally--unless it was already growing in popularity they won't get involved.  Otherwise, nobody will care.

Christ dude, he was obviously joking.  Have you lost your sense of humor when changing hemispheres on the planet?

Though, as I said in another thread recently, you did admit "Pundit" is a role you play.  So, maybe you DO like Forge products, and your "character" is working to make them look dangerous (in a variety of ways) to increase their popularity, and your dry serious response to an obvious joke is just you continuing to play your "role" :)
