This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

DM's--Do you mostly stand or sit while DM'ing?

I sit.

But then I have a friend who is standing most of the time doing gestures and big movements. I like his style but I haven't been able to emulate it well.

That's interesting. Most DMs I've known have always stood up while DMing at least once in a while. As I alluded to above, this was usually in a space - a garage, a game shop, etc. - where they could do so without it seeming odd.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

Stand, just like my GM Hero Nitro from KODT

I sit with the players around a table. I'm a GM, not a lecturer.

Sounds like a good thread to introduce myself. :)

I usually sit; the only time I've ever stood while GMing was when I need to reach a lot of things on the table, like minis or to clean the battlemat.

Granted, I'm not doing much live gaming at the moment, so it's a bit moot. When Skype gaming, I definitely sit; it seems nonsensical not to.
My name is Mark Kinney, hundredaire. I rent a small room and a toy boat.

I have to give you props for a cool reference.

I never even thought of standing.  What with note taking, dice rolling and map consulting.  Our venue doesn't lend itself well to standing, but this got me thinking about it.

I mostly sit, even at conventions.  At conventions, because of the amount of space available, I move around some.

Actually, since I am a wind them up and let them run kind of GM, At conventions I actually just go get water, stop at the restroom, look at what happened the last few turns in the mini games in the next room.  I seldom miss them finishing their dramatic conflictswith each other and they are awaiting my next dramatic nudge.

I am however, always peeling people away to take them to "The Office" (be it the kitchen or just outside of the room) for private conferences.

Likewise.

Exactly.

I tend to sit, but seldom around a table. I've been known to get up and pace, or even (heaven forbid) Act out certain interactions with the other player.

Heh. Didn't see your post before. Welcome to theRPGsite, tashkal. :)

I generally stand. I talk a lot with my hands in normal conversation so when running games that just gets exaggerated. I get to make the "I'm going to roll these dice and this monster is going to HIT and you are going to be DOOMED" motions when rolling to hit, I get to do all the standing-in-place motion acting showing what NPCs are doing...

... video of my GMing might make good blackmail material.

The thing is, this behavior is so natural now that when I ran a couple of Skype games, I still did it, even though nobody could see me.

Welcome to this cesspit. The language is foul, and so are some of the ideas, but the discourse is generally worth it...

Ironically, I'm more likely to get up while skype-playing, since we're on audio only.

beejazz

I sit, preferably in a soft chair I can lean back in. Oddly, I find that if I act too engaged, players will take their cues from me and I end up running things more than I want to. So I try to avoid acting too into it unless I'm setting up a scene or running a combat or something.

boulet

I sometimes stand just for stretching my legs. But most of the time it's like being a predator, when I stand my players are alert. No need asking to focus back on the game when some off topic tangent has taken over, I just stand up and my player know that there's a chance I'm going to role play right in their face any moment. Keeps them on their toes. My Amber games frequently end up with every players standing up in small groups reflecting the scattering of the PCs. I go from group to group like a butterfly trying to keep resentment as low as possible by accelerating time hogs players and stimulating the shiest ones. It's not LARPish at all (no costume, no pretend interactions with the scenery or physically involved combat enactment) it's just a convenient way to let all the conspiratorial negotiations part, that doesn't need the GM's presence, to happen while I resolve a scene with other players. My purpose is to get all players back at the table as soon as possible, easier said than done.
