This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Does the term "punk" mean anythingpunk or is itpunk just pretentiouspunk hypepunk?

Xpunk = X with 'tude, usually in a way that people in their late teens find edgy, original and mature.

Quote from: Sacrificial Lamb;286335Yeah, but if enough gamers use the term incorrectly, then they eventually co-opt the language, and thus use it correctly. ;)

Ron Edwards seems to be a master at this with his followers.  Especially with things like the term 'ashcan' which has had a specific meaning for decades in other industries long before gaming came around.

Quote from: RPGPundit;286332So it seems that no one can even seem to agree on what "punk" means in the context of an RPG, much less what should or should not fall under that category.

RPGPundit

I guess that kinda answers your question about whether or not is has any sort of unified meaning. :)

Victorian "memento mori" photographs wherin the baby is suspended in a jar of brine with electrodes and tesla coils attached is so totally "Steamo".

Also imagining Frankenstein with flat-ironed hair...haha.

edit:  the pickled punk should also have an ear trumpet-type speaker device that spits out "i hate you, mother and father" for full effect.

Quote from: Premier;286269"Dungeonpunk", meaning a style best represented by recent D&D editions, however, is pretentios bullshit. True Dungeonpunk would be alternate (17th+ century) history based on the assumption that megadungeons exist. So it would be, I don't know, the British Empire and the Spaniards duking it out with muskets and pikes in the depths of the Cimmerian Chasm; or Shermans getting blown up by Tiger tanks during the Great Cavern War of 1939-45, or somesuch.

You should create a setting for this idea... now!

There's nothing unpretentious about this hobby. Even Old School games are pretentious because of the attempt to not be pretentious.

Yes, I upset with everything...
