This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Proof that old school DMs were basically cruel and evil.

Quote from: Kellri;241564I think Madeleine l'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time was the inspiration for that Dragon article. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.
Well, and probably Heinlein's And He Built a Crooked House, referenced in the article. Also highly recommended.

Well, GJ, one is not going to deal well with a tesseract if one freaks over a little basic math. :D

It takes a sick mentality to put players through something like that.
You're damn straight.  If I didn't have at least one player in tears by the end of a session, I felt like a failure as a DM.  :)

It does?  My players tended to enjoy stuff like that. And they loved the alien starship they found in a Traveller campaign whose hold was a type of tesseract.

Tesseracts are kind of cool, really. I think the sick mentality of old school DMs is best summed up by the love of puns supposedly shared by so money of them.

I had (actually have, it's still around, here) an article on using Tesseracts in RPGs in my old RPG webpage. I regularly got comments about it.

One of the coolest was a kid who wrote me thanking me for writing my article, because his parents had been criticizing him for gaming under the presumption it was stupid, but when they saw my article, they changed their thinking and started to consider a somewhat intellectual pursuit.

I was flattered.

Incidentally, I hadn't seen this article when I wrote mine.
