This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

There is an interview with Rob Pardo where he touches specificaly on the color regarding setting. He said their main objective was doing gloomy but with a more diverse color palette and they had gone through several art directions before deciding on this one. At this point, i trust them on this kind of things.

There is also the opinion of one of the main graphic artists for the other 2 Diablo games but didnt participate on Diablo3 who was interviewed in diabloii.net (most objective opinion imho).

QuoteDiii.net: What do you think of the look of D3? Is it similar in tone/mood/theme to the game you envisioned and worked on at Blizzard North? There has been quite a bit of debate about the graphics, with many players complaining that it's too bright cartoon/rainbow-colored.

Ben Boos: I thought Diablo 3 looked fantastic at the WWI announcement.

As for the tone: A comparison of D1 to D2 comes to mind. I remember plowing ahead and making those green pastures and meadows in D2, and thinking after the fact oops! The original Diablo was so dark and moody; did I screw up the atmosphere? Then I went and made the bright desert wasteland, and the same potential problems cropped up. But it all worked out in my opinion, because we were able to take the player underground, and to various darker environments. Therefore, I think you can't judge the atmosphere of D3 from a short demo. Who knows what incredible sights await the player of Diablo 3?

At this point i fully trust Blizzard, the gore is there. (demo showing boss tearing up a player character and eating half of him, with blood all over, etc). There will be dark and gloomy caves, just they are trying to add some nice outdoor settings to set a contrast, cant appreciate dark and gloomy if you cant compare.

Plus the game is not finished yet, they have lots of room to polish, specially on that kind of user made pictures we are seeing around, that's just apply a filter so they can play around with that later on. Have to keep in mind the setting is Gothic not Noir.

There is always skeptics, but Blizzard has proved them wrong time and time again, at this point i just trust the guys. I am sure its going to be a great game and i am looking forward to it.
