This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Gaming (and non-gaming) austerity drives

Exactly!

I make it a point to acquire a new game or supplement every month. June-July, and December (Holiday) is tough. I go to one or more conventions then and generally do significant damage to my credit cards buying RPGs, games, minis, and supplements. At conventions I buy games for my kids (aged 4 and 6), games they won't find on the Walmart, Kmart, or Department Store store shelves (Some bookstores, toy stores, and toy chains are smarter though, and make it a point to acquire a variety of games from smaller distributors, the vast majority of games and toys still come from China though).

I also buy when I have to bite the bullet, just to ease the pain. This year I let the wife keep the tax return. all of it. I did buy two new Eberron books to restore the balance of Karma in the RPG universe.

You won't see new games unless you support the game designers, come on now!

I can't agree with your line of reasoning.  Make a product I'll enjoy and find useful, and I'll buy it.  Make multiple products I'll enjoy (like Clash, for example) and I'll send you even more money, and hopefully you'll prosper and buy out Hasbro.

But I'm not going to buy stuff just to buy stuff.  If enough people like your product and you've got a head for business, you'll survive.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

But...why? And the bit about supporting game designers doesn't hold water with me (see Ken's response above).

It's all a matter of taste, I realise, but perhaps we need a counter-thread: "Gaming (and non-gaming) consumption binges".  I can play the part of Pundy and ask "Why the fuck would anyone do this?!"

That's a metaphor mixed in a very disturbing way.

Hmm, well. There's enough new games and supplements coming out now that are enjoyable and useful as well. It's not like the old days where three guys in the whole state set a publishing shop in their basement and made supplements and games. Now there's about twenty guys in each major city, a half-dozen or so in every town, and a bunch scattered in cabins in the wilderness, on the beach with their laptop, at ComicCon in the hallway, and what not.

It's actually an Industry. It needs support to remain an Industry, and frankly I could care less if the guy has a good head for business, if he makes a good game or supplement.

For your purposes. :)

Seriously, I think that's very subjective.  Very little that comes out these days is tremendously useful to me, and very little of it is enjoyable to read.

That's pretty much what I said: make a good product, and I'll buy it, and so will (hopefully) thousands of others.

The industry needs support to remain an industry, true, but it also needs to prove itself worthy of that support in the eyes of many (note I did not say just me!) in order to survive.  Quality products will do that.  You find plenty that interests you, and that's awesome (seriously).  But I'm not buying crap just to keep the industry alive; I'm buying it because it's something I have a use for, something I'll actually use down the line.  If the industry doesn't produce what I like, then I'm not going to support it (but again, that's just me).
