This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Updating your Homebrew for 4e

How many of you have homebrew worlds you're either using, or planning to use, that contain elements that will clash with 4e? If you're planning to switch to 4e, how will you incorporate those elements?

Well, I haven't run 3.5 in a while, and right now I'm using a streamlined form of Rolemaster, which has pretty stock or standard view on a lot of the iconic creatures and races in fantasy gaming.  From what I've heard of 4e, if I were to play it, it sounds like it'd be a bit of work porting it to my homebrew (or vice-versa, I guess).  So it definitely wouldn't be used w/ my homebrew.  Something new, perhaps, but not that.

Well my homebrew was supposed to be for 3.5. A whole lot of concepts but nothing written in stone. 4E sounds like something I could work with. I was just going to give up on D&D and use another system.

My main concern is going to be integrating the new races. I have a homebrew world in my back pocket that I whipped up for a 3.5 campaign. It has a pirates and conquistadors feel to it, and the political and cultural organisation is currently elves-hobgoblins-drow vs. humans-dwarves. I never had half-orcs or gnomes, so their loss won't matter much, and halflings are in the world, but not in most of the games I run, so changes from 3.5 to 4 won't affect much.

There's a new continent that's just been discovered (about ten years previously) in the setting, and I think I'm going to use it to introduce the tieflings. The tiefling backstory of the PHB - survivors of an empire that bred with devils - fits really well. I'm thinking ruined cities filled with cannibal tribes of tieflings who cut out the hearts of their enemies and sacrifice them to their vermin gods? I was previously going to fill those cities with elves, half-elves and humans, but I think it works better this way.

As for the eladrin, I'm not sure yet. The elves-hobgoblin empire is supposed to be inferior to the humans-dwarves in arcane magic (but they have better technology, a more organised society and more clerics), so introducing eladrin would throw things out of wack. I might just end up replacing the elves I currently have running things with eladrin, and use the elves as another subspecies, like the drow.
