I love the series and the humour. But now it comes close to release I'm getting cold feet. I have this nagging suspicion that WoTC are going to botch it. I really hope I'm wrong.

Absolutely zero interest. R&M wore out it's welcome long ago, to me.  Dan Harmon comes off as a complete cock, and the show itself isn't just "black comedy" it's absolutely hateful, mean-spirited ego-stroking on Harmon's part.  So...yeah, no interest in mixing D&D with it.  I'd rather be stuck at a table at a con having to listen to infinite repetitions of worn-out lines from Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail

Looks like great potential for cringiness.

This and the Stranger Things set just seem like idiotic cash-grabs. As someone who works for a marketing firm, I applaud WotC scamming morons out of money by rebranding. As a gamer, I think this is pathetic.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

Fun fact: WotC has wanted to do tie-in starter sets for a long time, but they've also known when to cut their losses. There was one planned to be released connected to the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie, but as far as I know, it never materialized.

I could've sworn there was a boardgame that came out with it.  A little adventure game, maybe?  Not a full blown tie-in mind...

It's like $22 bucks - and a full boxed set. We're not talking about a lot of money or big profit margin here. I think they're doing it for fun , and yes for marketing/PR reasons, more so than for direct cash from the sales of these things.

They should do a D&D Monopoly edition... with supplementary combat rules and called it Classic 4e.

LOL j/k

or am I?

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

They did do a D&D Monopoly edition.

I think you're thinking of an April's Fools announcement they once did. As far as I know, they have not.

I'd go with cynical. But that doesn't mean that the creative team didn't put genuine effort into their work. Did anyone try the Stranger Things set?

yancy

I wouldn't buy this, but I would buy a version based on the Australian fake Rick & Morty, paired with a D&D clone.
