This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Pathfinder "1E" Beginner Box: It was an Awesome Gaming Product.

I bought it a while back, swiped the pawns, and added them to my Bestiary Box pawns.  Plus it had more pawn bases, a two sided gaming mat, a set of seven dice, etc.

Well, tonight I gave the Beginner Box an honest deep dive.  I played through the solo introductory adventure, read through the main adventure module; and then the player's guide, and gamemastery guide.

Wow.  There are so many positive things I could say.  I've read where many people brag about this being a great E6 solution.  It actually only maps out levels 1 - 5, but it would be easy to extrapolate things for another level of PC advancement.

WOTC still hasn't equalled the overall value of this gaming setup, imho.

Random encounter charts for various types of terrain.  Lots of Magic Items.  Equipment pricing.  Bestiary.  Spell Lists.  Additional encounter ideas.  Pre made character sheets.  Instructions for creating your own characters.  Explanations of Skills, Traps, Conditions, etc.

It has a big bang for the buck factor.  WOTC ought to match, or beat it; and neither the Starter Set, nor the Essentials Kit does.

Yeah, it is great. The new WoTC Essentials Kit almost matches it, but lacks the treasure & encounter tables and full GMing advice, preferring instead a lot more adventure. And instead of battlemat & pawns it has cards, screen & theatre of the mind.

I could totally ignore the included adventure, and just use this to run a complete game for months; then roll up new characters, and do it again and again.  Way more to work with than the Starter Set had.  It's just deeper, overall.

The Essentials Kit has a neat inclusion with the Sidekicks, but I've always had those.  They're called NPCs.

I think the PF1e Beginner Box remains the greatest introductory RPG product ever made. Much much better than the game it is an intro to!

But wait! There's more!

Over on the Paizo website, under the section of it detailing the Beginner's Box, there are 4 downloadable adventures and an extra character class for people to keep going.

(I'd link it, but am at work on a phone.)

They really did go above and beyond with that product.
"Meh."

here's the link-  https://paizo.com/beginnerbox    I bought this back when it was first released, then bought everything I could get my hands on. I bought it for my Son and I to play with hopes that we'd find others to join. still have the library. even the box is nice and heavy ( we used to carry our D&D basic and expert sets around in middle school in the old TSR boxes) this would have been the bees knees back then.  my son stuck with GURPS ( raised him playing The Fantasy Trip Melee&Wizard) so while he liked the Pathfinder library to read, I just couldn't get him interested in PF. But I agree that this set is excellent. I've rarely played PF solitaire (it's a bit too hefty for solo play - for me anyway) so I stick with my old TFT and my 1st edition sets for my solo campaigns.

I agree that it is an excellent product, and surpasses the WotC sets.

EDITED TO ADD: Oops. Scooped by Mor'du.

I think history will show that Paizo's finest contributions have been the 1E Beginner Box, and the Bestiary Pawn Sets.  They are good for the hobby.

Well done sir.  The greatest shame of it all, is that I am an educated man.  A man of letters.  Haha!!!

Has there been any word of a new Beginner Box for Pathfinder 2e?

Re: a 2E BB...

If, like 2E core, everything in character creation is some type of Feat; it just won't be the same.....

An OSR style take on a PF 1E BB type product would be great.  Probably be a hot Kickstarter too.

From memory, Baizuo put in quite a lot of design time before making the 1E Beginner Box. A 2E version is arguably going to take more time plus the designers still have to learn the new edition in a comprehensive way.
