Quote from: BoxCrayonTales;1045947There are some things in fantasy gaming that could come off as offensive to women and descendants of colonized cultures. The blog "Your Dungeon Is Problematic" (yes, that is the actual title) goes into a lot of detail about how many D&D monsters have descriptions that are exceptionally disturbing, reminiscent of real world racist propaganda, or unintentionally hilarious in a creepy fashion.
You know, a big part of the problem with so much of this shit, is not so much that someones analysing gaming material in this way.

It's that by and large their completely self-appointed and just so very very very bad at it.

That's really one of the biggest changes that has happened.  Ten or fifteen years ago most of the people doing this kind of this at least had some kind of training about how to actually analyse texts.  But taking a look at this "Your Dungeon is problematic" guy, he's a law student...and it's quite obvious from a quick read that he hasn't really got a fucking clue about how to actually do even the most basic kind of textual analysis.

It's just vapid.

Fascinating. Would you point out some specific examples of what you mean? How would you analyze the text by comparison?

Aaand I just did some more digging into the Origins thing.

Holy shit it's a literal witch hunt. They're even posting pictures of his DAUGHTER on #Twitter. And while I don't know who's telling the truth about what happened at Origins yet, the accounts have been inconsistent and contradictory, and his accusers are the ones crossing the line now. I definitely need more facts, but if I were to make a conclusion now I'd say he's innocent of everything he's been accused of.

P.S. It's Vile, not Evil, Genius Games. Just want to make sure the wrong people don't get targeted too.

But I suspect (and my suspicions should be taken as 100% accurate 100% of the time, unlike silly scientific polls) that 90% of the population couldn't tell you what gamer gate is or even understand why it matters.

That's because the ranting of a dozen or so guys doesn't matter. Not even a little bit.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1045907One of the ironies of the last few days was reading some of the SJWs responding to the DnDGate tag holding up the Lorraine Williams era "morality contract" (which enshrined said Bowdlerizing into the contracts of all designers for TSR) as being an example of how "social justice has been a concern of D&D for years now".

Wow.  When Horseshoe Theory goes straight into Fibonacci Sequence Theory, they're so bent around.

I checked out the hashtag, and ended up telling off some guy who felt that not calling Pundit by his chosen name was acceptable behaviour. I see no difference between that and deliberately misgendering someone. You might not like someone but that's no excuse to try and dox them.

This is exactly the kind of hypocrisy that makes me dismiss people like that outright. It's a case of someone whose 'principles' only apply to the people they 'like'.

I'm totally liberal, classic liberal. I actually do believe in free speech. I will totally take shots at Pundit. But I take shots at the things he says, not him. There is no reason to make it personal. There is no reason to make personal attacks. That is childish bullshit. When I first heard about all the horrible things about Pundit, you know what I did? I looked for them. I read every single thing I could find that he posted. I did not find racism. I did not find misogyny. I did not find sexism or bias against gender. I don't like some stuff Pundit says politically, but I am not going to pass blanket judgement on him because some tool says I should. I make my own decisions. If some fucktard is making my side of the political spectrum look bad, I will call it out. Fuck that. If you don't like shit Pundit posts, have the balls to say it so he can respond. Have the balls to read his retort. Don't make passive aggressive posts on social media in a vain attempt to get people to like you. That's bullshit.

I really don't like using the word hate. But I hate the current mindset of polarized politics. There's these vocal assholes both left and right who want to make each side hate the other and I just can't stand that shit. My mom is VERY Conservative, and if some left winger on my team started shitting on her, a person who worked for the Federal Government for 35 years, I would not hesitate to punch them in the face. This is because my humanity and the people I care about are more important than politics. If I did not like Pundit, I would not be here. Period. When he talks about OSR stuff, I really enjoy that. Shit is going to happen that we disagree with, and mostly it is out of our control. What we do have control of is our relations with the people we interact with. Try and set a good example and apologize when you fuck up. Forgiveness is easier to ask for than permission. Everyone fucks up. Everyone. But if someone is trying to be a good person, they deserve to be cut some slack.

I like Pundit. If he says something I disagree with he usually has his reasons. I may not agree but I can respect that. So yeah, if some leftist on my team wants to make personal shots at him, and I call them out, and even if they decide to call me a Nazi right winger. Fuck them. I don't suffer people who consciously choose idiocy.

I like Pundit too.

Mainly because I know where I satnd with him: I agree on his approach to gaming in the main, like what he does, like who he has collaborated with and appreciate this corner of the internet that he has setp up for people on the OSR side of the hobby who like frank and honest discussion.

As an anarcho-syndicalist lefty-libertarian, it is best we don't compare politics. I have authors like Noam Chomsky, Michael Parenti and John Pilger on my reading shelf, but on my gaming shelf I have Lion & Dragon, Fantastic Heroes & Witchery and AD&D 1st edition.

When change threatens to rule, then the rules are changed

There's a personal rule I've always followed, but TBP coined it first before the brainwyrm got them, but it cemented what I've always tried to follow:  Attack the Argument, NOT the Person.

I admit sometimes it's hard, but I try to follow that.  But of late, it seems that trying it, just ends up with the other party taking it personally.

Well here are a few ways that I can see how "criticisng ideas" can be construed backhanded insults:

Person A: "I don't like the idea elves have a free ability to change gender"
Person B: "Aversion to gender-fluid elves is transphobic."

Person A: "I don't need to highlight the sexuality of NPCs, be they homosexual or heterosexual."
Person B: "By not highlighting non-hetero cis couples in your campaign world, one is particpitating in their erasure. This homophobic.""

Person A: "I like that old artwork."
Person B: "Yeah, that's soft porn, and it is the stuff of sexist bigots"

Person A: "I like the traditional fantasy about exploring ruins and caves and fighting orcs."
Person B "That is an imperialist fantasy and has racists overtones.".

Person B is using strawmen to defend their point.  They are making assumptions based on their own ideas instead of asking the main and most important question:  Why?
