This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Which OSR RPGs Have You Actually Played/Run?

Quote from: Larsdangly;1033670I'll have to dig them up and re post them. I've always been kind of conservative about spreading around stuff that is on shaky ground, IP wise, so I prefer to just send a google doc link to individuals who express interest rather than put up a permanent site.

If you're not selling them, Fair Use laws stop 99% of the noise. At most, you'd get a C&D, but given that people had pay-to-play LotR MUDs back in the day that popped around, a free PnP RPG PDF isn't going to raise eyebrows.

IP laws look scary on paper, but Fair Use takes the piss out of them, especially if you're not making a dime. And don't even get me started on parody protections!

Personally, I'm stunned how much cash you can make off using other people's IP using a parody umbrella.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1033917Hey, it sounded like a western game, an OSR western game, and I'd never heard of it. I don't know if you're aware but I'm quite the fan of the wild west (currently running a campaign in its 2nd year set in the historical wild west using Aces & Eights). I was surprised I didn't know (or didn't remember) this game's existence.

It's the kind of thing I'd be happy to receive a review-copy of.

There's been plenty of posts on this very site about it so I'm surprised. It's been around since forever and its only a buck on RPGNow. Its a little dated now (its actually based off Castles & Crusades which means you can easily mix and match it - in fact my own Tombs & Terrors and Medieval Mysteries are even more compatible than C&C) but people still seem to like it, on the whole. I made it unavailable for about 6 months a couple of years ago but enough people contacted me to ask where they could get a copy that I made it available again.

Well, it's possible I just forgot about it. I think that an OSR western game could be interesting. Though to a certain extent Aces & Eights is just close enough to D&D that it may have that covered.
LION & DRAGON: Medieval-Authentic OSR Roleplaying is available now! You only THINK you\'ve played \'medieval fantasy\' until you play L&D.

Simon makes good games. I have copies of almost all of them, including both the western-themed games. Wish I could comment on how they fare in play, but I've never had a group into cowboys (being from Texas, you'd think maybe...but no).:-)

Anyhoo, I'll end with the obvious gushes: Barbarians of Lemuria is a classic, and Supers! is still my go-to for superhero campaigns. Keep up the good work, sir.

The first OSR I bought was Starships and Spacemen so yeah... :D

Honestly, and this is a side tangent, I would be surprised if Texans were into cowboys.  It's a stereotype that a lot of people I know from the South claim is played out.  You'd have better luck with those of the East or West coast, from what I've been told.

At least, that's been my experience.

Hmm, Go Fer Yer Gun looks cool though.  I'll have to figure out how to swing that one.

Well, there are plenty of cowboy hat and boot wearing sum'guns back home, more so, the further you get away from Austin. I grew up with the type, but it as mostly for show. Except for a few actual cowboys (people who ran ranches), most of my friends and classmates weren't into that stuff. I know I do not qualify as an exemplar. I don't have an accent, I don't wear the hats, I find the boots uncomfortable, the kicker dancing boring, the hot weather absolutely awful, and, the politics, for the last couple of decades, ridiculous (we have stupid ass governors--there's no way around it).

It's all good, though. I ended up moving to a fairly remote area of Colorado. Wish I'd done it years ago. Of course, Texans, some of them my friends back there, will say, "don't let the door slap you in the ass on your way out," but I fergive 'em. They jest don' know any better.:-)

P.S. No knock on the people there. Most of them are nice, my horrible, racist relatives, aside.

C&C was my first, then I dabbled with Labyrinth Lord and Swords & Wizardry: White Box for a few years before I switched over to the LBBs.

Quote from: RPGPundit;1033918Given my tastes, a better comparison might be to Tombstone, Deadwood, or (obviously) Gangs of New York.

Maybe, Pundit, but I'm sharing the trick that worked for me. And spaghetti Westerns are how I did it;)!
