This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

G’day theRPGsite, tell me about yourselves

Hi,

I am a stereotypical grumpy, jaded, old-school GM  - and a professor of history.  The rpgsite is awesome, and I am not saying that because it's the only place that will put up with me. We argue and curse a lot, but beneath that ugly veneer, folks here have a deep understanding and appreciation for the hobby.  Discussions here are not really for the thin skinned, but they are generally honest and based in deep experience.  There is kind of a 1st amendment culture here. People will respect your voice even if they spend 20 pages destroying it. If you like a "vigorous discussion" you're in the right place.

1) I am currently running Traveller.  It's a great change of pace for me.
2) I am kind of a mechanics and systems junkie.  I am heavily biased towards straight forward, traditional mechanics that don't get in the way.
3) I am currently in Colorado

Greetings,
   1. I'm in a Skype Pathfinder game right now.
   2. I'm up for talking about anything related to RPGs. Normally, that slides into whatever I'm currently playing or interested in at the moment.
   3. A Chattanoogan living in the cold, frozen tundra of North Dakota.

Gidday Wade, there's a guy doing a thread about Geektogethers here, perhaps you could advise him.

Did we meet at a Melbourne Geektogether? That was a long time ago, its a shame it no longer runs.

I read over that thread, but I'm not sure if I can contribute much. I dont have any experience with organising gatherings like that, as I only have experience running games and booths at bigger conventions (ie: PAX Melb, CanCon, etc...).

I play nothing at the moment. Had a short-lived groups about a year ago starting a  fantasy campaign. But had to quite  because of my work schedule. I am hoping to get a game going of both Barbarians of Lemuria in the age of Conan and a red-box D&D-Expert game as well (when I figure out which setting to use).

I generally like Sword&Sorcery/weird fiction/sword&planet, lovecraftian games and Tolkiens Arda. I also have a bit of a obsession about D&D and it's broader off-shot OSR variants. I am also a bit off a collector. I get interested easily in a lot of systems but I am really more into rules-light at heart. And a bit of junky of campaign settings (muh lore'n'shit ;) )

I am from south Sweden.

I like to hang out on the /RPG subreddit (which is good for news announcements and reading about GM/Player drama stories), I like rpg.net (they like their story games and some people 'really' get into talking about gaming culture), I was looking into some G+ groups... but they're kinda dead.

Any bits of advice are welcome. While I am planning the geektogethers as the main thrust of my project, there will be auxiliary things like having a table at the local comic-con to show off tabletop RPGs.

1) I've been GMing for a little over 30 years now and that's mostly what I do, but I'm currently playing in a friend's 5e D&D campaign and being on the other side of the screen has been a very illuminating experience.

2) I like to read everything my beady little ape-eyes come across, but I only chat here and there, usually to ask or answer a question, but I like setting spitballs, OSR-ish mechanics, and my guys and I are into stripping down systems for efficient handling the way some dudes strip down cars. I also like to chat about stripping and I once went out with a stripper.

3) I'm from Albion's Old North, though apparently I was very nearly an Australian!
Running: RC D&D, 5e D&D, Delta Green

OK, I guess I should answer:

1. Currently, I'm running Lion & Dragon, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Aces & Eights, and a Wuxia OSR setting of my own design very loosely based on the tv series "Into the Badlands".

2. I mostly talk about my own work these days. Goes with the territory. Or more broadly, about the OSR.

3. Currently living in Uruguay. Born in Canada.

I'm currently running a Palladium Fantasy campaign for a group that's been gaming with each other for 25 years. And another Palladium Fantasy campaign for my eldest daughter and her friends.
I think game design theory is bullshit for pseudo-academics. Maybe it's just recency bias but after ~15 years of people talking about game design theory on the internet I just hate it. I like to talk about cool stuff I can throw into a campaign. I run sandbox games so stuff that I can put in my toolbox to be pulled out later.
I'm a third generation Arizonian but went to middle school and high school in the Bay Area but went back to Arizona for University (Bear Down!) and moved to Milwaukee when Wells Fargo purchased Strong Funds 10 years ago.

Mordred Pendragon

I'm currently considering running either an Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game or a game of Changeling: The Dreaming, not sure yet.

I like to talk about all sorts of gaming-related subjects

I live in Roanoke, Virginia, Eastern United States.

Wade, welcome to the board.  I think I talked to you a few times on /rpg a couple years back around the release of Fragged Empire.  Congratulations on the game, as well as it's followup settings.  While it was ultimately too crunchy for my group, I enjoyed reading over FE.  You had a lot of good ideas in there and the presentation is beautiful.

  • I am running two games weekly on Roll20.  Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea and Stonehell using Swords & Wizardry.  I am playing in a monthly game of Dungeon Crawl Classics at a local game store.
  • I mostly like discussions on GMing.  Useful tools, interesting random tables, dungeon layout and design, etc.  Some game theory is interesting but after a while people start trying to fit everything into ridiculous terminology that just obfuscates the discussion in an attempt to prove something is wrong by defining at something other than what it is.  I'm also on a bit of a medieval history kick, so all the discussion around authentic medieval gameplay has been very interesting to me.
  • I've lived all over the U.S.  Just moved to Atlanta last fall.  It's ok.

Quote from: Wade;1024277By the looks of this would I be right in assuming that most people here fall on the 'libertarian' side of the spectrum?

I think the entire political spectrum is fairly well represented on this board, although it likely appears more that way because the Pundit is very outspoken on his politics and political opinions are not censored here, unlike another board.  Anyway I find it pretty easy to ignore/avoid all the politics.

Just joined, because after lurking for a couple of days, I felt like I had come home. :)
