This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

G’day theRPGsite, tell me about yourselves

HI! Your stock took a sharp dive at "I like RPG.net" but I won't hold that against you. I'm willing to take a risk and buy low and hopefully your value will skyrocket as a participating member of this elite community of ironically non-ironic humble egomaniacs that believe the one true way to game is to smash all one true ways. Except for the ones I endorse of course, of course.

1) I'm playing FASERIP (Classic Marvel Superheroes)
2) I'm obsessed about GMing. I like talking about settings, systems, mechanics, and giving unsolicited advice that is always correct.
3) I'm from Los Angeles. But I've lived all over. I'm currently visiting Dallas for the last the 20-years, and oddly liking it. I may stay here.

In your honor I'm eating vegemite and peanut-butter sandwiches for lunch.

1. Currently I'm not playing anything, as we just welcomed my second daughter into the world (so far, she's been using STR, DEX, CON, INT, and WIS as dump stats for CHA, which is through the roof... what a little powergamer).  Also, I'm working nights, so I don't get much time to game.  But that will change soon enough, as my schedule changes at the end of March.  I'm also considering running a Savage Worlds pulp/Crimson Skies game, but not sure about it yet at all.

I have two Stars Without Number games on hiatus, and I had ran some Cepheus Engine (basically OGL Mongoose/Classic Traveller) one-offs too, recently.  I was playing in a D&D5e game as well.  Generally, I think D&D5e is decent enough, though I would definitely play it with as few feats as possible.  Way too fiddly.

I have been playing RPGs since the mid-80s (I was 9 when I cracked open the Red Box Basic D&D and haven't looked back since).  I still think that the Twilight:2000 2nd ed. autofire rules are the best ever published, and that Heavy Gear >>>>> Battletech.  :)

2.    I'm a newer addition to Stellagama Publishing, a small indy press RPG company. We publish science fiction gaming materials for SWN, Traveller (Classic or Cepheus Engine), and some of the other OSR stuff, like White Star.  It's only four of us that produce materials, and we're really proud of These Stars Are Ours! a full science fiction setting for Cepheus Engine.  You can get it on drivethrurpg.com.  I wrote the adventure hooks/patrons and did a big chunk of the editing (so typos are on me!).  And I've got a few SWN-compatible books out there too.

I don't really care much about the ideological underpinnings of the OSR, though I do appreciate what happens when my players realize that they have fewer constraints than some of the more modern RPGs that we've played over the years.  I stumbled across Stars Without Number a few years ago, and I really like the way it plays.  The new rules are even better, and I'm pretty happy with how things have turned out in my games.  I will say that I still get twitchy about Armor Class.  I have learned to live with it, but it doesn't feel right in modern/sci-fi games with guns. But that's me.

I like talking about GMing, world-building and sandbox-building ideas, and adventure ideas too.  I really, really like designing adventures and multi-layered plot-hooks that can be turned into adventures with very little effort.  I think that's why I've gotten into SWN so much: there are so many tools to help me run amazing adventures without too much work.  I like that.

3.  I'm in Montreal, Canada, where I am a teacher.

This is very true. Never played T:2000, but I use those buckets of d6s in all kinds of other games!

Quote from: Wade;1024277I recently found out about this forum through a Reddit discussion on RPG communities, and I was wondering if you could tell me about yourselves. There was no 'say hello' sub Forum, so I thought I would just post this here.

I like to hang out on the /RPG subreddit (which is good for news announcements and reading about GM/Player drama stories), I like rpg.net (they like their story games and some people 'really' get into talking about gaming culture), I was looking into some G+ groups… but they're kinda dead.

I'm playing in a 5e Homebrew Campaign run by a young twenty-something GM. Having lots of fun with that! I'm running 0D&D, and aStar Wars games at the moment. I'll be going to GaryCon next mopnth to help out with the convention, and to run a few pick-up games.

I'm an old-school RPG GM. Mostly I talk about Original D&D, Gamma World, Classic Traveller, ...like that. I also like to write about worldbuilding, and history because they go hand-in-hand with roleplaying, and about good GMing. I especially like to talk about homebrew worlds, and making up your own gaming materials and supplements. When I started playing D&D, the only way to have adventures, was to make them. That's why I like guys like Flyingmice, Tenbones, and others here... Everything they create (well almost everything!) is an original creation, and our hobby and recreational pastime is much richer for that.

I'm from Germany. Traveled all over the world, however spent the most time here in Indiana, and really got into RPG gaming out in Colorado. Been a wargaming since 1972, and have played (and run) role-playing games since 1977.

Thanks everyone, it's nice to meet you all :)

I think I'm in flyingmice's camp, as I'm not into OSR or story games, and I mostly play my own games (once you start publishing your own stuff it becomes a rare treat to play other people's work).

My first gaming experience was with 2nd Ed D&D, and it was very cool… but the guys I were playing with kinda sucked, and I've only ever played one terrible game of 1st Ed with a DM who was not good. Most of my gaming history is with homebrewed versions of the HERO system and now I mostly just play my own stuff (sometimes I think I just got so carried away with my homebrewing that I accidently made a job out of it).

I noticed a few people mention politics, and the giant "The Rules" post at the top of the forum :P By the looks of this would I be right in assuming that most people here fall on the 'libertarian' side of the spectrum?

I will have to check out the 'Design, Development, and Gameplay' forum, as on occasion I like to share my Works in Progress to gather feedback from other people.

There was an optional rule in the Special Operations Handbook that allowed for aimed 3-round bursts which addressed the instance where more accurate bursts are possible.  However, I think that basic 1/6 chance of hitting with each bullet in a burst is a fairly accurate simulation of automatic fire in combat.  And what's more, those rules also had suppression fire built right into them.  So that was cool.

I don't know if libertarians make up a majority, but they're quite possibly the largest bloc when it comes to political affiliations here. I don't identify as one though I'm far closer to libertarian than any of the other American political labels. Politics is generally kept out of this section unless it specifically pertains to a game or other gaming subject. For other things you'll have to look to Pundit's forum, which is basically the Wild West. That's where all the political explosions happen and people often completely lose their cool. :)

I'm running Labyrinth Lord once a month for some coworkers. I'm prepping games of both d6 Star Wars and Traveller/Clement Sector for a local convention in two weeks. I am about to start up a local d6 Star Wars game series (same setting, different groups, occasionally all meeting for massive adventures).

Almost anything besides theory. If it does not have a practical application, I don't see the use of it. I tend to be more interested in science fiction and science fantasy RPGs myself.

I suspect >50% have not voiced a strong option (although as someone who wants to avoid it like the plague here, I don't have the most complete picture). It's more that... well, let's say you want to carry on a discussion about something specific and noncontroversial--let's say what decade to best situate your cliffhanger RPG campaign. The topics which can come up in a thread which all but guarantee that you'll never get the conversation back to cliffhanger rpgs are--storygames vs. trad. TTRPGs, old school vs. new school games (particularly d20/D&D), rpg.net/TBP, and anthing vaguely in the social justice socio-political broad category. The first two are arguably reasonable points of contention amongst gamers, the third a historical grudge match/genuine disagreement on best way to run a forum culture, and then politics (my view upon, I have already stated).

The giant post is a recent development. If it makes you feel better, the bakery I work in has a big AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY sign, which routinely gets ignored. It's sole purpose is so we can say, "Can't you read?" without getting in trouble. :D

1. I'm playing in a GURPS cyberpunk game. I was playing a GURPS morrow project, but I need those Sundays for personal time, so I am only GURPSing every other Sunday. I'm up next to run, and I'm planning a futuristic hard-ish sci-fi game inspired by The Expanse, Altered Carbon, Transhuman Space, Eclipse Phase and to a smaller degree, Stargate. I also run two Radiance d20 games, one for a work group every two weeks on Friday, and one for a group of friends every two weeks on Saturday.
2. I like discussing everything related to RPGs - how to play, how to GM, help me find..., opinions on everything from the Industry (I've been an insider lurking for sometime now...) to our Hobby and the benefits of tabletop gaming. I also (here on theRPGsite) like to use my comedy and direct talking to poke fun at hard-liners who preach "one true wayisms" or against puritans that like to inflict rules on others. I can get uppity, but generally I listen and try to understand where people are coming from BEFORE I spit a tirade.
3. I'm from WA state, Puget Sound. Working in Redmond, living in Renton, born in Tacoma. I took a small break for about 7 years in Las Vegas but came back because I was dry enough.

Reddit is probably the only major game forum that I haven't frequented at some point. I originally came to this site because google led me to a discussion on mega-dungeons that interested me, but I was oblivious to the pundit's reputation. Since then I've noticed his infamy in the rpg world and don't have much use for this place as a result.

Judging by the impossible-to-miss banner you've noticed as well, the pundit wants to be able to Big-Brother any political talk he disagrees with. But judging by posts like this, he wants to be able to throw his own political nonsense into any old topic. I don't truck with hypocrisy, nor the spite I suspect I'll experience the next time I wander here.

Quote from: Wade;1024277What games are you playing at the moment? I've just started a new game of Aeternum.
What's Aeternum, haven't heard of it. Currently I'm only playing TCGs -- Hearthstone, Magic, and I'm getting into Pokemon with my son -- but I'm going to be DMing the first adventure of the Zeitgeist AP later in the month. Hopefully it turns into further adventure. :)

Quote from: Wade;1024277What type of RPG stuff do you like to talk about? I generally like to chat about game-design theory, good GM practices and creative inspiration.
These days I don't talk about rpgs much at all, I'm kinda burnt out. I've seen every rpg topic come up there is to see, argued all the arguments there are to argue, and now I mostly use rpg forums to chat with forum friendlies on RPGnet and Paizo during my lunch breaks.

I used to talk a lot of mechanics, though. House rules to bring RAW in alignment with RAI, house rules to balance a game, house rules to make D&D...well, 'make sense' from my PoV. So yeah, I liked talking house rules especially.

Australia and New Zealand -- sorry I know you folks hate each other, but that's where LotR was filmed ;) -- are on my short list of places to visit. Can't wait to see a kangaroo in person, though I'm sure they're 100% mundane to you.

I'm from and live in the U.S.. Grew up in a super-rural landscape of beautiful greenery that I now miss. I've lived in big cities, and now I'm a suburban dad. Everywhere has its perks, right?
