This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

G’day theRPGsite, tell me about yourselves

I recently found out about this forum through a Reddit discussion on RPG communities, and I was wondering if you could tell me about yourselves. There was no 'say hello' sub Forum, so I thought I would just post this here.

I like to hang out on the /RPG subreddit (which is good for news announcements and reading about GM/Player drama stories), I like rpg.net (they like their story games and some people 'really' get into talking about gaming culture), I was looking into some G+ groups… but they're kinda dead.

  • What games are you playing at the moment? I've just started a new game of Aeternum.
  • What type of RPG stuff do you like to talk about? I generally like to chat about game-design theory, good GM practices and creative inspiration.
  • Where are you from? I'm from Melbourne, Australia.

1. Currently in a gaming doldrum. Mostly I DM some form of D&D. My group played AD&D for decades though I have been running 5e.

2. This forum, once you get around the quirks, is bar none the best place to talk about the OSR (Old School Revival/Renaissance based on some older edition of D&D). I mostly avoid the political discussion because nothing good ever comes of that, but the people here even if they are abrasive, will give you useful feedback and opinions when it comes to actual game discussion and I like that. I like the honesty even though it sometimes comes across as harsh, because it is often very detailed and can be datamined.

3. I live in Calgary, Alberta in Canada.

1. I currently GM East Texas University (Savage Worlds) and Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition. I was playing Savage Rifts until recently, but that game is on indefinite hiatus. I'm also gearing up to start a campaign with the new Masks of Nyarlathotep when the latest edition finally drops this year.

2. As Krimson said, there's a lot of talk about the OSR and older D&D in general. I read the political stuff in Pundit's forum as it can be entertaining at times but I rarely post there. I don't really post that often, but usually when I do it's about games or systems that I'm more familiar with like Savage Worlds or the Sine Nomine games.

3. The middle of nowhere, otherwise known as western Arkansas, USA. Living out in the country has its perks but access to good Internet and lots of gaming partners are not among them.

Welcome to the zoo.

This place has almost no rules.  "You're a stupid sack of shit" is a term of endearment.  Eyes gouged out are usually handed back.

On the other hand, we DO talk about gaming.  You won't get banned if you do or don't like this game or that.

Just don't mention "story games" around Pundy, he gets bitey.

I'm playing Pathfinder right now, and about to go to GaryCon for my annual dose of gaming.

I've been wargaming since before RPGs existed, and was part of Gary Gygax' group as of late 1972.  I enjoy talking about the assumptions and play style of old school, but really don't mind if people like other stuff until you start telling me it's "wrong" or "bad".  "I like this better than that" is simply opinion, "this is objectively better than that" will get you fanged.  For bonus rabid attacks tell me I only like OD&D because of "nostalgia."

I am also 62 going on 13, and my sense of humor reflects this.

I live in a little dying shithole town in the middle of the eastern half of South Dakota.  No, we don't have any oil, that's NORTH Dakota.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Welcome aboard!

1) 5e, setting: Tekumel. (Up until last summer I was using an AD&D-EPT fusion, but we decided to try 5e, and stuck with it).
2) Tekumel. I hangout almost exclusively on the Questioning Chirine baKal II thread, but I do occasionally join in on other threads. Come over if you want to talk about Tekumel, and go off on completely non-related tangents every so often.:D
3) Tekumel, no wait I mean the snowy, frozen hell that it is Toronto, Ontario.

Hello!

I'm running mostly (a lot of) 5e D&D in the Wilderlands of High Fantasy on the Arnesonian sandbox model, with a fortnightly 4e D&D Nentir Vale side game (mostly combat) and 2e AD&D occasional solo Council of Wyrms dragon-PC game. I like lots of social interaction elements in my D&D as well as dungeon exploration & combat.

Your list of RPG stuff sounds good to me. I guess maybe I prefer more 'best practice' than 'theory'. I like OSR stuff as well as 5e.

I live in London but I grew up near or in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I am running a face-to-face Shadowrun: Anarchy campaign. It's been a lot of fun and the first version of Shadowrun I've been willing to run.

Also am a player in a couple play-by-post D&D 5e games. We had a face-to-face game of Dark Albion/FH&W going, but that kind of fizzled because the GM works a lot.

This is definitely one of the best OSR discussion forums. Also good for OSR stuff is Dragonfoot. I do like RPG.net for general gaming discussion. ENWorld has got the most up-to-date news.

I am currently playing 5e D&D (with options turned towards a TSR-style: no feats or multiclassing), as well as a home-brew Mad Max-inspired game I wrote with my friend (the GM). On the side, I DM 5e and Beyond the Wall for my nephew when convenient. Favorites I'm not currently playing include Adventure, Conquer King system, WEG Star Wars, and Traveller (original or the Mongooes semi-remake).

I've been gaming since 1983 when I was 8-9 (first game I owned was BECMI red box, although I was introduced to the game with the "big kids' " Holmes-B/X-AD&D mashup). Played BECMI until '89, then moved to 2e, then GURPS and HERO and other complex systems until the OSR brought me back into the D&D-like fold (5e being an 'acceptable compromise').

Conversationally, I prefer to discuss gaming best practices, DM/GM advise, broad concepts like 'does rule X incentivize behavior Y' or 'how detailed a setting should be,' etc. I also came to the 'original/early-era' games (oD&D and 1e AD&D, LBB Traveller, etc.) after the fact, so I do enjoy a bunch of discussion of the historical aspects of TTRPGs and the whole 'why did it turn out this way, and not that,' etc.

Overall, I am not that hard to figure out--I don't believe in 'best ways to game' or the like. There's no purity in anything, much less silly little games. I'm not a genius or idiot, neither are you, nor that fellow over there (or at least I have no real evidence thereof, you might be a genius on your own time, that's none of my business). There are decent/horrid people and good/bad behavior on all sides of any issue. Politics (or pseudo-political social issues) have no place in gaming (on either side), and I'd frankly prefer not to know my fellow gamers opinions on ___. My sense of humor is kinda reverse-Gronan's: once I turned 20, I didn't need to use swear words or sexual/scatological references anymore (I just contradicted this earlier this morning, but that just shows that I am never a purist).

I live in Richfield, MN, USA; although as of last night, we just put in a bid, and it was accepted, on a house in Minneapolis proper. So {update: we close at the end of March, and I hope never to shop for houses in a seller's market ever again}

Welcome to the boards! People are right, it is very much the Wild West here. Do not expect to agree with anyone 100% of the time. The lack of any but the most basic moderation or censorship is the #1 thing that makes this place great. So be prepared to go at it hammer and tongs, and pick each other up and move on with no hard feelings. That's the kind of place this is. You'll love it.

I've been here since before the Pundit took it over. I generally post about things important to my own gaming, and unimportant to anyone else in the known universe. I am not interested in the OSR, so I have no idea why I stay here. I'm not a story gamer either, so I'm neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat. :D

I generally play my own games, so I'm always playtesting something. I live in the Hub of the Universe, Boston MA USA, and I'm old as dirt.

Welcome,

***DMing 5e at two libraries with open games. At home I would rather play Dungeon Crawl Classics or BEC/MI (no time for the MI levels). I am also playing an Earth Pony in my wife's My Little Pony RPG, named Ace with a cutie mark of an Ace of Spades.

***I lurk more than I post but it is a lot of fun to see the personalities go at it from time to time. And, there are some people here that have some legitimate insight regarding the beginnings of D&D/ RPG industry. I like the "history of the game" as well as the game.
After feeling like I had been zombified from a few years of D&D 4e, I came here looking for some insight on more streamlined faster gaming and discovered this thing called the "OSR". I still don't know what is and is not OSR but I am damn happy to be doing some more old style easier/ enjoyable gaming (even using 5e).

***I currently reside in the mountains of north Georgia.

Running two games of D&D 5E, with optional rules to make it more like BECMI/RC.  One game is set in a homebrew world with pockets of highly developed civilization but problems maintaining population.  The other game is about to "reality shift" to that same world.

Like to talk about design and how games work, and a few other related things.  My genre tastes are very narrow, primarily limited to epic or high fantasy, with a dose of "sword and sorcery" thrown in to leaven it.  I don't have anything to say about much that goes on here, but read a lot of it.  (I lurked for over six years before something tempted me to post.)

I'm from North Alabama.

2. All kinds I guess. I'm not real big on 'me too' comments so if someone comments here and I agree you might never see me say a word about the subject.
