SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

We need an upvote/downvote system.

After spending too much time on another forum where they do have it, it'd be a nice new feature.

If you mean something like "like", I agree. Not so sure about downvoting as on reddit or slashdot.

That only encourages groupthink and tribalism to be honest. It can sometimes work on unmoderated sites, but I don't think replacing the light touch moderation here with heavy community moderation, even if it is toothless, would be any improvement.

This seems sufficient for me. I think people can judge the merit of individual posts on their own with out having a meter like up or down votes.

arminius

The purpose from my POV is to allow efficient feedback without having to clutter threads with "I agree" posts. It doesn't have to have a filtering mechanism attached.

The Butcher

I dislike the idea. Besides feeding the ego of some posters and quantifying our dislike of others, what's the point?

Yeah, I have no particular interest in implementing something like this.  I don't see what good purpose it would serve. I can think of a few problems it could cause, too.

I don't think we really have a problem with "i agree" posts cluttering the threads.

you shouldn't need to see how many up or down votes a post has to evaluate it. Just use your own judgment. My feeling is these just don't add anything to the conversation. It will turn discussions into popularity contests.

Should we let people rate individual posters as well, if you want them to rate posts?

danbuter

I don't like this idea. There are a number of subs on reddit that are incredibly toxic, just because the regulars downvote anyone they don't like, and once a thread has enough downvotes, you won't find it anymore (following a day or so).

This is why I would only favor a "thumbs up" or "like" option, not a "dislike" or "downvote".

Honestly, r/rpg is one of the better subs on reddit, and one of the more pleasant RPG forums I've been to despite being almost entirely self-policed.

We don't usually get a lot of those anyway. In a few places I notice upward only voting is used as a form of proxy disagreement which tends to antagonise and heighten disagreements rather than letting people hash things out.

Because we're talking about improvements to this forum, which has its own unique culture and attractions. Granted, any change would affect the culture.

Anyway, at this point I think the proposal is moot; just answering because you asked.
