SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Is Ghost Whistler banned now?

This.

I'm going to miss some of GW's gaming posts, but Jadrax pretty much nails it.

Keeping stuff in the right forum, ensuring one is posting RPG-related content, and not trolling are pretty easy rules to follow, and pretty light yokes, as well.

In fact, I'd say those should be basic cornerstones of any RPG board. If someone can't follow those items, after repeated, repeated requests, then there's not much hope for them to continue on here.

What exactly was he banned for? Was the thread deleted or something? Because that "Modern Gaming" stuff is pretentious, but I'd not call it exactly "out of place".
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Why is it that when someone is banned here, usually for being a dedicated douchebag, people come out of the woodwork to decry this great loss to gaming discussion?
"Meh."

Sacrosanct

I will admit that I don't know enough about GW or his alleged history to make a comment on whether his ban was justified or not.

But to compare the moderation here with TBP is pretty laughable.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

But that's not what is actually required. The actual breakdown for games between forums is decreed by our host based on his personal vendetta with the authors, hearsay about the game, random words from the introduction taken entirely out-of-context, and rules snippets interpreted in the worst potential way possible. If all that fails, just create a new goalpost phrase and decree it as being on the "wrong" side.

There's a difference between storygames and RPG's, yeah, but it's a damn fuzzy line and this forum constantly errs on the side of conservatism regarding it.

Personally, I would say that his actions were childish in this regard, but I think you have the right of it here.

I never really could jive with Ghost Whistler and his posts, sort of like that Mouse dude who used post here.  I mean, I wanted to get what they were posting and have an involved conversation, but most of the time I just couldn't pick up what they were laying down in the first place.

However, he was warned numerous times so it's not like it was out of thin air.

Keep up the good work, OHT, it's a fucking thankless job. :)

While there is certainly substance to your argument, it's not like the guy woke up one day and posted a thread to the traditional games board and we then banned him 'cos it was deemed a storygame.

He was doing it for years on stuff that Pundit had told him where to post it, because he didn't like the divide. Fine, you don't like it - now in future threads about so and so go here. He was told that so many times. He also was warned about posting whatever he fancied in the media forum - he continued. So he's gone.

Your posts carry a lot more weight when read in the voice of Sam Elliot, I've noticed.  Like there is some sort of inherent authority there. ;)

It's really, really not complicated: the main RPG forum is "For discussion of traditional pen-and-paper roleplaying games and anything related to their game mechanics and settings, as well as industry events and gossip."

Emphasis mine. This is the Traditional RPGs forum. So:

(1) If you want to talk about D&D, Rolemaster, Palladium, GURPS, TORG, World of Darkness, etc etc etc, this goes into the Traditional RPG forums.

(2) If it's obviously not a Traditional RPG, e.g. Fiasco, GM-less games, story games, whatever, it goes into Other Games.

(3) If you want to post about a game that is somewhere in the greyer than usual area between these two spectrums, whether we're talking about FATE, Dungeon World, hybrid games, and the like, either you PM a mod or admin or Pundit to ask where that should go, OR you default to the Other Games forum, maybe also firing a PM to ask us to move it if it was posted in the wrong place.

That's not hard. It really isn't.

Now, posting in the wrong forum occasionally does happen. A new guy comes in, posts about Apocalypse World in the Main Traditional RPGs forum, okay, no problem, we move the thread and it's over. That happens.

But those who KNOW after a few attempts where a thread about this or that game should go because they have posted before, because they've seen threads moved before and so on, because they were the very same people involved with Pundit into countless arguments about the game until he made his decision about where the game went, these people have no excuse. And if you're constantly trying to stir the shit about it, if you willfully, repeatedly for months and years on end post in the wrong places because you WANT to, even though you should know better, and test where the line is constantly for the lulz or whatever, then you shouldn't be surprised if at some point you are asked to stop with that shit.

And if you don't, if you go on with it for years on end and ignore warnings that this sort of shit on your part must be stopped, ultimately, sooner or later, you'll get booted, because that's posting to disrupt the site.

It's really simple. Don't be a dick.

I hate seeing people get banned. GW could be a goof, but he did have a lot of good rpg threads. I'd also love to see what post actually pushed this over the edge, as nothing started by him has been moved to Other Games in weeks.

Yes, I am curious as well, because I hadn't seen any new thread since that Modern Gaming one.

As much as I didn't like that pinko bastard's rambling, he wasn't going past mild annoyance at worst.

Precisely. No one is getting banned for posting something in the wrong forum once or twice. Hell, I've done it before on accident. When there's a sustained pattern, that's when it becomes an issue. We're not going to ban some wide-eyed innocent lamb, coming in to discuss Dungeon World who posts in the wrong forum because he doesn't know better.
