At this time I'm uploading a snapshot I made on December 29th. As far as is known that was the last time the database was backed up. :brood:
After the upload completes (at or around 6 AM EST) I'll need to configure it to get the review section to work properly. Then I have the lovely fun of rebuilding the search index (the snapshot having been taken before the index was recompiled).
Hopefully EN World will be back up in some form by the morning and will be up as recovered as she can be within a week.
As to the Gamestore - I didn't write the code that drives that but as far as I can tell it uses it's own database so with luck this crash won't affect it.
-- Pooka, aka Spoony, aka Goblin Flectomancer, aka something else next week.
After 1 hour of uploading my computer has set a new estimate on upload time - 16 1/2 hours :(
Hold on folks, this will take awhile.
I just hope most storyhour writers have their updates on their boards.
Quote from: goldI just hope most storyhour writers have their updates on their boards.
I was thinking that five months is is going to be a lot of game time to make up in a Play by Post game...
There was a rift? I never noticed.
Five months? Wow, that will hurt all PbPs games :(
Pooka is a friggin' hero.
And by 'hero', I mean "someone who is going extraordinarily out of his way to do difficult and time-consuming things to help another site that really needs it.
I'm humbled, and deeply appreciative.

Holy shit! It's Piratecat. He lives!
Classy move, Pooka.
Hopefully all of the "my messageboard can beat up your messageboard" schoolyard crap is behind us now.
And a little downtime over there does give folks some time to take a look at what you have set up here.
Maybe this town is big enough for the both of us.
Quote from: goldI just hope most storyhour writers have their updates on their boards.
At least in my case, I've got all of the updates to my pair of SHs intact and each parsed by week, so it'll just take some time to repost them once the SH forum is back up. I'll regret losing months of feedback on them, but it's better than it could have been.
I suspect that we'll be losing a bunch of SHs that had slow starts, or abortive starts, in the last five months. I hope I'm wrong however.
And bless you Pooka. You are indeed very cool.

What he said.
This is so amazingly cool of you, Pooka. Thank you.
And I gotta ask ...
What about the Circus? If it's just gone, and we have to start all over, I may just krai irl.
Honestly, what is the deal with Enworld in that it goes down, is slow, has issues, all the time?
Is it the ISP? The server? What? I'm always close to getting a membership and shit like this happens and I'm always thankful I don't.
Good to see you around PC. :)
Quote from: VelmontFive months? Wow, that will hurt all PbPs games :(
I strongly recommend using Google to try to find copies of any missing threads. I found most of the ones I was worried about in Google's cache.

I would assume it's just the massive amount of people hitting it every day. That's the price of fame. :)
Echohawk has a good suggestion, and once this is all resolved I think I'll make a habit of downloading my current game threads on a weekly basis or so.
One of the members over at CM (Lycorys) set up a temp board for us to use here - http://39.freebb.com/circvsminimvs/
My apologies to the administration here - I'm just trying to spread the word.
Meh.....thats about the best thing I can say.
I think this will be a fine time for the ENworld community to learn, the hard, harsh way, that posts on a messageboard, even if they are irreplacable, aren't really all that important. Life goes on. The community is still there. And really, what's important to a message board isn't the archive of posts - it's the people. And I've yet to see a server problem that could kill users. (though that might actually be kind of neat...) (not a comment against ENworld, just a general thought :))

Theres waves of fatbeards who have emerged from their parents basements blinking at the sunlight and lumbering to the mall. THey'll have to fumigate the place after ENWorld goes back up and they head back into their hideyholes.

It is my hope that out of the ashes of this disaster the rift that had erupted between Nutkinland/Nothingland and ENWorld can begin to heal.

Let me add some words of thanks to Pooka for stepping up like this. I got stuck in a crappy situation at work last year A server crash wiped out all of a client's data and the guy that broke it came crying to me to fix it, and we ended up losing a $xxx, xxx client over it. I know how much it sucks getting called in to try and make the best of a really bad situation, and speaking as someone who has been there and done that -- THANK YOU!.
pooka, dude, you rock. not much more than i can say beyond that!
as far as possibly (likely?) losing threads goes, i am for once *very very* glad that i've been on hiatus from Creature Catalog conversions all year. :) won't be losing any threads then...
but i will mourn the loss of the FC1 demon threads i started. :( fortunately, they served their primary purpose before their tragic loss. ;)

Luckily I was able to save my most recent post for my 'Adventures in Cormyr - The Bandits Nest' game, so that means that as soon as ENWorld is back on line my group will be able to continue where we left off. :heh:
I also managed to copy everyones character sheets, so the only thing I've lost is the details I post about Eveningstar in the OOC thread
You rock, Pooka, thanks a whole bunch!!
And don't worry, Shal (and anyone else from Toki's GL pbp), the site should be almost loaded when I get home from work...then the real work begins. Issue 11 should be good to go ASAP (Issues 9 and 10 I'm not in as much of a hurry for)
It should probably be noted that, in the span of ENworld's life, 5 months isn't THAT huge of a span. Five months from now, this loss will just be part of the ongoing history. Huge numers of threads were lost, but even huger numbers were saved. It's a good thing that backup image was still around. :)
Alright, not to brag, but I think I got the important stuff from Living Supers. Most notably:
the two game threads (Quake is missing page 9)
the HQ thread (missing a few posts in the end)
the character thread (missing Paladin)
general discussion thread (oddly, page 11 is lost in limbo, but I could get page 12)
And some other sundries, but those are the important ones.
If the LS people are reading, anything else you want rescued? In that case, thread titles makes them a lot easier to find on Google. To be honest, I don't know if I have much time tomorrow, but I'll try.
And kudos to Pooka for saving our forum, and to Agamon for saving one of the coolest PbP:s. :emot-flowers:
To lucky for words.
More props for Spoony/Pooka! Thanks for saving the boards.
My PbP game has all been recovered from google cache except for a couple of posts.
To all worried about loosing their Story Hours and PbP games, try Googling your threads and looking in the Cache. A lot can be recovered from there.

but not the rogues gallery -
thanks for the advice folks
Michael,
I just wanted to say that this was a very classy move by you. My hat is off to you and if I see you at GenCon I'd happily buy you a beverage of your choice.
Thanks.
I have been able to save some things not others. The web is very mysterious. I couldn't get the thread for the rogues gallery thread, just the forum display page.
I've managed to get all of my LEW games back using enworld archive files (whatever they are, they are quite handy) but I couldn't find these for the other pbp games. I could find cached versions of the threads, but could not get to pages other than the first.
I'm sure there are ways, I just couldn't think of them.

Ugh. For some reason, I am now unable to log on to the boards an ENWorld. I think this may be because I changed my password since December. And the password retrieval function doesn't seem to be working :(.
I hate to add to the burden of those who are most likely already swamped fixing things, but does anyone know if the password retrieval facility is broken for everyone, of if it is just me that is having problems?
Never mind. After a lot of digging, I eventually managed to find the password I was using in December last year.
But the password retrieval system still seems to be broken, at least for me.

I'm sure Morrus and Co. have already been made intimitely aware of what they
should have been doing during these past months. :p I think you'll be seeing weekly backups being made from here on out, which means it was an educational process. 5 months of posts lost is a small price to pay for proper backups from here on out. You might not think it was a small price... but what if this db corruption hadn't happened until, say, a year from now? 17 months of posts lost... The problem was probably going to happen eventually anyway, and it's good that it happened sooner rather than later.
I've jumped over there to check, and the place is already buzzing with activity. New threads all over the place. Good to see. In fact, I'd forgotten how CROWDED that place is! Tons of people everywhere! It boggles the mind that someplace can start as small and humble as Nutkinland and grow to have such a tremendous number of members. And Eric Noah's site did start small, in the beginning...

Let me address this directly. Since you want to remain anonymous I will respect that. How Circvs Maximvs got started was unfortunate. Yelling for it to be destroyed just adds to the yelling in the room. Just quiet down, let tensions relax. If we don't severe all ties but instead strengthen them then CM might go away because it is redundant - but it would not be "shut down" as you propose but merged into either NTL or NKL administrators on both sides willing. But as long as there is a fued the forum isn't redundant - it very much has a purpose by keeping the more angry kids from shitting in each other's sandboxes.

I really like having this website all about RPG's. One more off topic forum is just not necessary, please do not merge them.
Let's get back on topic. Discussion about CM and its history and future will just ruin a perfectly good thread. Too many strong emotions in some people.
