Title: CavScout Banned
Post by: One Horse Town on March 17, 2009, 05:22:02 PM
Due to continued derailing of threads in the RPG section of the site, as well as making conversation all but impossible in some threads, the user CavScout has been banned.

A-yup. There are assholes, and then there are people who exist to make any sort of discussion impossible. So, good news there.

On the other hand, Seanchai is also banned. What happened there? I didn't like the guy at all, but I never thought he deserved anything.

Seanchai is banned for 24 hours, something that usually never happens here, but it is part of the object lesson in teaching the difference between RPGnet moderators and this site's moderation. He kept saying that there was no difference, so he won the right to be treated like there really isn't.  After all, if what he was saying were true it wouldn't have changed anything, right? So he can be a big boy and admit he was wrong, or he can keep dealing with the rpgnet-level of moderation he claims this site already has.

Just as I predicted. Funny, there really is no substantial difference between RPG.Net and your modpolicy as of this moment.

Sad thing to see someone leaving behind his ideals.

Look upthread, it´s already the same bullshit Pundit used to abhor:

"Somebody "did" anything."
"Somebody "deserves" sanctions."
"Valuable contributions"

Fuck this bullshit. Fuck this bullshit back when it was about something abominable, when I stopped posting. It was the beginning of the end, as it now shows.

Get to your senses, folks. You already ARE a modclique. Snap out of it.

EDIT: Oh, and bye again. I´ll start posting again when the bans are lifted, including Fritzs and WalkerPs. Bannings are a sign of weakness & insecurity, as well as the lack of trust in the power of discourse. It´s the slacker´s way out.

But that doesn't make sense, Pundit! It makes no sense at all! This is a downright bizarre way to address a poster complaint. "We demonstrate our principles by showing you how the people we are opposed to would be doing it."

Well, whatever, your forums, your right to moderate them. At least CavScout's case was justified, but this... sheesh, NO.

Good to see the site's approach to obnoxious behaviour coming more into line with the Pundit's views on in-person behaviour.  Inviting asshats to keep participating on your website is very much like inviting asshats to continue coming to your gaming group.

Look, we aren't talking about WalkerP's somewhat dubious banning over his stubborn dead horse beating.  I was disappointed to see him go as well as anyone, but he really did bring that upon himself.

We are talking about a consistent troublemaker.  If I invite someone to my house and tell them 'Make yourself at home', and they proceed to shit on my carpet, the responsibility isn't on me to assume they must shit on their own carpet at home, so I shouldn't judge.  They still have the responsibility to be a functioning member of society.

'Free Speech' doesn't mean anyone can come along and shit all over conversations just to get their rocks off.

I agree.

I was trying to put it into words but you did it much better than me. There's a fundamental difference between free speech and complete social anarchy. Free speech comes with an individual responsability to behave as a functional member of society. When you act like a total jackass consistently, you basically forfeit your right to free speech.

Society takes notice and may act accordingly.

I think it makes perfect sense. He made an accusation against me, over and over again. When I insisted it was not true, he and others ignored all the evidence for that.

There's nothing I hate more than the kind of fascism that those fuckers have engaged in, and to have someone come up to you and say "You're a fascist pig" over and over again, well, clearly I had to figure out a way to actually be able to make it undebatable that I'm not that way.

So, ok, Seanchai claims to really believe that I'm no different from rpgnet mods? Fine!
He's never going to fucking shut up about it anyways, so I might as well grant him, and just him, his wish and treat him exactly the way they would. That will have the benefit of actually confirming his world view for him, while making an obvious example of just how fucking different I am.

FOR FUCK'S SAKE! I don't ban people for criticizing me or for their ideas about games.  I let you fuckers insult me over and over again day in and day out for YEARS.  The very least I deserve is not to be called a fucking fascist. What he's been doing amounts to gross personal attacks in a stalkerish fashion.

Hey, to his credit, CavScout made a liar out of me.  I long maintained that, once he was cut off from political threads, he'd voluntarily stop posting within a month.  He lasted longer than that, and proved that he wasn't just here to stir up shit on the political spectrum, he was here to stir up shit across the board.

Also to his credit, he inspired me to get my ass out of political threads and into a broader survey of the roleplaying community online.

Jack was banned from posting in the political thread, but was free to post in the other threads on the board.  Because he thought he was grouped unfairly with Cav Scout, he chose to leave theRPGsite on his own terms.

No, but I did stumble back into active discussion regarding HeroQuest.  There's something of a shit-storm brewing over whether or not the forthcoming new edition is becoming too Narr instead of more Sim.  See?  Wherever you go, there you are.

Maybe because I don't hang out in off-Topic, I never had a problem with CavScout...

But, the moderation here has been much more lax than rpg.net (at least the way rpg.net was back when I posted there regularly)...I haven't been banned, warned or had to navigate around a passive aggressive clique of douchebags once. I've found it very easy to talk about rpgs here the way I talk about rpgs, that's why I've stuck around.

At rpg.net, at around 500 posts or so I think I'd been banned 3 times temporarily and once permanently (which ended up being temporarily). Just for chatting about rpgs the way I do.

As far as I'm concerned, I've been unmoderated. I've already noticed you need to be a real huge, annoying douchebag or, like, a child molester to get yourself banned here. Basically, you need to be asking for it.

Everyone else needs to chill out. Let them run the damn site!

Quote from: Sacrificial Lamb;291137Nor do I. Seanchai is a major dick. Maybe the 24 hour vacation will do him some good.

The whole idea of "hopefully you'll learn" does seem fairly pointless to me.  Around here, with this one notable exception that was really meant for proving a point about the vast differences in moderation style (much more than it was meant to be about banning anyone, I don't WANT to ban Seanchai, the whole thing wasn't an exercise in moderation as much as it was an exercise in rhetoric).

That's why here we don't pull that stupid rpgnet shit of "we'll ban you for 24 hours so you'll come back and be a good boy". Its nonsense. If someone is really so bad here that they have to be banned, its going to be forever.  The point isn't to get them to "learn" its to stop this site from being disrupted.

The mere act of selecting the "banned for 24 hours" button made me feel dirty inside.

The only reason for doing it in this case was because someone was claiming that there was no difference.

You're probably right about that being pointless. I get the feeling that the ban was more symbolic anyway than to "teach him a lesson", and I don't blame you for getting peeved over his bullshit accusations either. He'll be back here soon, and life will go on as usual. No bigee.

Be wary Ian, I just realized that droog is Falstaff to my Henry V, so he's off the LIST. So, there's a couple of extra slots available....

I know you're making a list, but are you checking it twice? Getting rid of droogie gains TWO slots? I had no idea he was so... wide.

Not bad, Clash. You were on the LIST for your own good. You are too nice for this forum. Apparently this is not the case. So, you're off the LIST.

AM I NOT MERCIFUL !
