This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Banner Ads on theRPGsite?

Hey all,

The financial crisis has hit even the RPGPundit, and I'm looking at the possibility of having the site go somewhat "commercial", having banner ads.

What I'd like to know, from anyone here who's a game publisher or has other things to advertise (cons, websites, games, whatever), whether you'd have an interest in advertising on theRPGsite if that option existed?

How bad is the financial crisis? I haven't actually donated before, but I will now if it means the continued function of this place. I guess I'm just not too keen on flashy pop-up ads or anything...

RPGPundit

To be clear, the continued function of the place is not currently at risk, and I'm not thinking of pop-up ads.  I'm thinking of putting some banners up, probably from people who are friends of the site in the first place, in the hopes of getting some personal extra income.

This site has always managed to pay its server costs on donation drives, we did so well with the last one that it's been well over a year now since we've had to do it, and will probably be several months more till we'll need to again; I don't really see that changing, thankfully there's clearly always been plenty of people who've valued this site.

Possibly. I'd have to run it past the rest of the crew, but if the price was right we might be keen.
One author of Diaspora: hard science-fiction role-playing withe FATE and Deluge, a system-free post-apocalyptic setting.

RPGPundit

It would probably be some kind of either per-month thing or "number of loads" thing, the idea would be for it to work out to something along the $30/month range probably. How does that sound?

Geritol and Depends would be good sponsors.

Maybe K-Tel records if they're still selling "Best of the 80s" compilations.

As long as it was Early 80s.

We'd probably consider a couple of months trial at that rate a reasonable investment. It's inexpensive, but the vocal part of this site is not likely our market. Who knows what secrets lurk behind these posts though. :D

Same here, but I want to support the site, and this would justify it as advertising. Besides, there's a couple people here who like my stuff.

I do, but then I already know about it :)

I'm not an advertiser but as a user I'd request that the weight of any banners be limited and that they don't contain animated gifs or Flash (or similar).
