This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Welcome to the Spookhouse

Ghost Whistler

Since that incident in 1947, where we were beaten to the punch by J. Hughes Robard, the Spookhouse has existed - unofficially of course. We aren't interested in the reds under your bed, your political beliefs mean nothing in the face of an alien invasion. What we care about is what goes bump in the night. Roswell was the first example of an alien incursion, and it wasn't the last. Since that time we've gotten our hands on a great deal of extraterrestrial technology and with the help of tax dollars we've done our darndest to unlock its secrets. Now we use it, though not without risk, against those aliens. We have allies in the government, but we are a small operation and even the president doesn't know we exist. This gives us the flexibility to exercise our mandate to its fullest, but we're on our own - and we can't let the general public know what's going on. We have to believe that the invaders don't know we know...

Robard Industries has been the premier purveyor of consumer goods since 1947 when it's first patents rolled off the production line. Now it's in a position to compete with the biggest corporations in America thanks to the genius of reclusive inventor J. Hughes Robard. However the secret of these incredible, revolutionising, designs is that Robard got his hands on technology that came from outer space. The crash of a UFO in 1947 was claimed by him and his business interests. He had the smarts to bring together the greatest minds in modern science to work to unlock the potential of this material. Unfortunately Robard remains ignorant to the true purpose of the alien incursion: they have not come in peace. The Spookhouse doesn't know that Robard isn't the same man he was in '47. Those aliens learned what had happened to their errant comrade and replaced him with a clone. Now they can't get close to him.

The guards at RI facilities are armed with fresh-off-the-production-line rayguns while Professor Asimov's patented 'Future Men', robots with positronic brains, patrol test labs. Asimov was recruited in 1948 by Robard personally and is one of few that has access to the technology to make his theories a reality. Robard regularly advertises on the saturday morning adventure serial 'Future Men and the Children of Tomorrow'; a show it hopes will introduce this staggering new invention to the world. An invention the Invaders hope will be the first step in controlling these errant monkeys that call themselves human.

Now this doesn't need a load of narrative nonsense. The good guys are unashamedly the good guys. Not people with dark pasts. Also the stats need to have appropriate names (a bit like in Toon!).
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Ghost Whistler

#1
Roles:
Driver, Soldier, Operator, Face, Sneak (a final choice would be Experimental, for robot agents, perhaps even podperson double agents!).

Gear:
Drivers can requisition vehicles including Spookhouse tech.
Soldiers have access to guns and Spookhouse weaponry.
Operators can requisition anything and repair it.
Faces have access to identities and disguises.
Sneaks have access to infiltration and covert technology.

Abilities:
Drivers can perform vehicular stunts and chases well. They can get away from threats or pursue a target relentlessly.
Soldiers don’t lose their nerve in combat and are effective tacticians.
Operators can understand Invader technology better and can repair/upgrade/improvise equipment.
Facemen excel at interpersonal relations, including encounters with 'undercover' Invaders.
Sneaks can operate without being seen or attracting too much attention.

I wonder if it might be fun to toy with the Apocalypse World style playbook. Certainly the phrase 'playbook' is appropriately americanish. The Spookhouse likely have their own playbook.
