I've noticed that Star Wars Saga Edition turns some concepts of D20 on there head at least when it comes skills.
D20 you start of pretty naff in skills 4 ranks + attribute modifier. If your skill is opposed by an opponents level (intimidate for example) then it stays roughly equal as you level up against an equal level opponent.
If it opposes a skill (Bluff verse Sense Motive) it is likely to get better, unless the opponent can improve that skill as fast.
Saga on the other hand, you can start very good or at least pretty good assuming that's your focus.
1/2 heroic level +5 (for trained) +5 (skill focus) + attribute.
If it's used against an opponents skill (stealth verse perception), then you stay roughly the same, as even an opponents untrained skills improve at the same rate.
If it's used against their attack (Deflect: Use the Force verses Attack) then you actually get worse against an equal level opponent. As BAB improves 1/1 level but skills improve 1/2 levels. It start of about +9 better than attacks (trained and focused), and ends up about 5 worse than attacks.
If it's used against a saving throw (Deception verse Will Save for forged papers) then it starts about equal (trained and focused) and end's up about 10 worse.
Of course in both SAGA and D20 you improve against lower level opponents.
Yep, this is one of the things I've noticed, too. Progression is a lot more level-based than in other d20 games. On the upside, though, 1st-level characters are at least fairly capable.
I'm waiting to see how this pans out in the game itself.

As one of those gamers who liked the basic concept of d20, but prefered a little less crunch, I really like this game.
My copy is on the way. I look forward to reading it over and comparing to True20.

there are a fair amount of simularities between the two, but I think Saga is a little more simple.
