Her Majesty's Occult Service is a government department headed by Doctor John Dee, officially the Queen's Astrologer. England is under mystic assault from various sources, particularly Spain, but also the Catholic Church and the Vatican, and Scotland to the north. Not all these enemies are creatures of darkness - political and religious considerations make for different lines of conflict in this game than in Blood Games II. The feud between Catholic and Protestant is particularly bitter.

Hmmm. Damn! I had no idea Stross' series had this name! I've read both novels separately, and until you made this post never thought to look up the name. Nothing to do with Stross. I just came up with the same name separately. So don't worry that you missed anything.
Apologies!

It is indeed! It would also make a great RPG. I've decided on "On Her Majesty's Arcane Service" for my own project.

Hrm. The angle of Dee as Elizabeth I's head of the secret/occult service sounds familiar, too. Didn't Ken Hite do something along these lines? I know Alan Moore did in The Black Dossier, the second sequel to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

It's obvious. He was her court Astrologer, after all.

Of course besides Arcane. You could do "Her Majesty's Cabinet Dee" ("D" used as an appellateion for certain arcane agents.)
Or the Special Occult Service..
